TransFIRe researchers at Northumbria University have developed a method to convert waste polyethylene terephthalate (wPET) into an unsaturated polyester for use in protective coatings applications, thereby also lowering the demand of virgin petrochemical feedstocks typically required to produce these polyesters. This research has just been published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering 2024 New products from high-grade polymer particulate waste streams - Transfire (transfire-hub.org) #coatings #sustainability #sustainablematerials #plasticwaste #PETwaste #recycling #alkyds #alkyd resin #unsaturated polyester #thermoset #polymers #networkpolymers Bradley Thomas James Railton, PhD Jamal Bousbaa Justin Perry Matthew Unthank Nicole Lopez JAYPLAS AkzoNobel
About us
TransFIRe is funded by UKRI under the ISCF TFI challenge. This challenge aims to develop innovative technology to reduce energy and resource use within the foundation industries – which include the cement, glass, ceramics, paper, metals and bulk chemicals sectors. The challenge has up to £66 million to invest in projects, match-funded by £83 million from the private sector. The projects will look at new ways to reduce waste and energy use and in a new research facility to accelerate development of promising clean technologies. Key aims for the challenge include: providing funding opportunities to accelerate development of clean glass technologies supporting research on new ways to reduce waste and energy use supporting university-led research into radical new technologies developing foundation industries’ common identity to better meet challenges for the sector partnering with the financial sector to encourage more investment in technology companies that can reduce the environmental impact of the sector.

Our TransFIRe Work Stream 3 colleagues have had a paper published on their research into bottlenecks to glass return and refill schemes in the UK! Currently, only about 36 % of collected glass in the UK is remelted to make new glass bottles. Exporting of glass has increased recently, causing supply issues. This raises the question of why there are not large-scale refill schemes for glass bottles. Our researchers conducted User Journey interviews with four senior representatives of key stakeholders to explore glass manufacturers’ and distributors’ perceptions about national refill schemes for the UK.
