About us
Transforma Insights is a research firm focused on the world of Digital Transformation. Led by seasoned technology industry analysts Transforma Insights provides advice, recommendations and decision support tools for organisations seeking to understand how new technologies will change the markets in which they operate. To address the implications of the technology-driven change, often referred to as Digital Transformation (DX), we examine the intersection of three inter-related areas: New Technologies (which comprises a dozen technology families including concepts such as IoT, AI and distributed ledger), Transformational Use Cases, and Enterprise Change Management. In order to support our clients’ as they navigate this intersection of these three areas, we provide a set of research tools. The Best Practice & Vendor Selection Database offers unrivalled information on current and historic DX deployments, comprising thousands of Case Studies providing would-be adopters with critical understanding of project prioritisation, best practice, key success factors, and the leading vendors with which they should be working. The Database links seamlessly to our new Vendor Connect platform, a mechanism for connecting technology vendors and would-be technology adopters. Based on our detailed understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of supporting vendors, we provide competitive benchmarks in the form of our Vendor Peer Benchmarking. These tools help vendors understand how they are positioned relative to their peers in these emerging markets. Our TAM Forecasts are quantitative guides to the market opportunity, covering each of twelve technology families, looking at hundreds of use cases across 20 vertical sectors and covering 200 countries. Finally, our Technology Insight Reports provide a qualitative guide to the dynamics and impact of the twelve technology families upon which we focus. These are updated annually.

On the latest edition of the The Peggy Smedley Show, Matt Hatton and Peggy Smedley discuss the reasons why we didn't hit 50 billion IoT devices (hint: that's not what we were expecting anyway) and the various challenges in growing IoT.
One of the questions I often get is "why didn't we hit 50 billion IoT devices in 2020 like you analysts were promising?". The answer is a combination of the following: - That 50 billion figure wasn't from an analyst firm, it was from Ericsson. - It wasn't even 50 billion IoT devices, it was all connected devices. It's still a fairly big miss, but only 40 billion of them were expected to be IoT. - The forecasts in 2011 from my previous company, Machina Research, said 12 billion . We ended up with 9-10. But it's still a miss and there are conspicuous examples where it didn't grow at the pace that we might have expected. That's what I discussed with Peggy Smedley when she was kind enough to invite me onto the The Peggy Smedley Show this week. Have a listen. https://lnkd.in/eJBqssw2

Has cellular IoT failed? That's the question asked by James Blackman in an article on RCR Wireless News, to which our Matt Hatton offers quite a lot of different perspectives. A few selected quotes: "There’s a general friction in the use of IoT-specific public networks. Coverage is patchy and roaming is awful. So there’s a retrenching going on – to piggyback on tried-and-trusted consumer networks." "If millions of meters use NB-IoT, then NB-IoT will persist in that country. But [it becomes a tech] for domestic use cases [and not global ones]." "RedCap is in no way ready to step in for NB-IoT or even LTE-M – at least for another [3GPP 5G NR] release or two. Today it’s only being used for gateways and a few modest use cases. Price, battery life, and functionality – not least that it needs 5G SA networks to be activated – are not even close to being able to hit the capabilities of those technologies." What do you think? https://lnkd.in/e6_exect

Last week many of our followers were deeply engaged in a discussion about AT&T's recently announced NB-IoT closure. What is your view on the likely future for this technology?
The AT&T NB-IoT shut down news is out. Is it any wonder that we at Transforma Insights picked ‘Decision points and pivots in support for LTE, NB-IoT and public LoRaWAN’ as one of our IoT Transition Topics for 2025. There’s a very interesting convergence of discussions around the long-term viability of certain network technologies coming up in 2025. This AT&T decision is very much a pre-cursor of that. There’s a general friction in the use of IoT-specific public networks. Coverage is patchy and roaming is largely awful. So there’s a retrenching to the tried and trusted piggybacking on networks paid for by smartphone users (LTE mostly). The increasing use of LTE Cat 1bis is a good example. That’s bad news for NB-IoT, public LoRaWAN and to a much lesser extent LTE-M. The latter has always been a much less painful enhancement and the functionality is generally good. That said, there will be a plethora of examples where on a country-by-country basis there will be a valid case for continuing with those IoT-specific technologies. If, as in Sweden, for instance, there are millions of smart meters using NB-IoT then that technology will definitely persist. Same for any technology. But they become technologies much more focused on supporting domestic use cases. For this reason, we probably shouldn’t assume that there will be a mass dash for the exit on NB-IoT. And, as mentioned previously, even less so LTE-M. Also worth noting that really RedCap is in no way ready to step in for NB-IoT or even LTE-M for a release or two. Today it’s only being used for gateways and a few modest use cases. The price, battery life and functionality (not least that it needs 5G Stand Alone networks to be activated) are not even close to being able to hit the capabilities of those existing technologies. So there’s not an easy immediate migration path to a native 5G technology. There’s lots of work going on to develop RedCap, but the fundamentals mean it does not substitute for NB-IoT and will not for 5 years at least. If you want to know more about our Transition Topics for 2025 check last week’s press release: https://lnkd.in/eFcnhigA And if you want to know what’s on our research agenda for 2025, covering those and a load more topics, drop me a line. https://lnkd.in/eE8gZq7r
