📚 New resources: Advancing clean cooking access in Freetown, Sierra Leone Millions of people in Freetown and many other African cities still rely on costly, polluting, and unsafe energy sources—whether for cooking or electrification- in informal settlements. This is not just an energy challenge; it’s an issue of health, environment, #gender equity, economic opportunity, and climate resilience. Through the #ENACT programme, two new reports unpack how policies and finance can accelerate urban energy transitions in Sierra Leone: 1️⃣Policy recommendations for clean cooking access in Freetown, Sierra Leone: How can policies drive the shift to affordable, safe, and sustainable cooking solutions? 🔹Sierra Leone has progressive policies—like the Clean Cooking Compact (2019), Renewable Energy Policy (2016), and Renewable Energy Action Plan (2015)—but barriers still hinder widespread adoption, especially in informal settlements and low-income households. 🔹 A successful transition requires awareness campaigns, smart incentives, financing options, infrastructure, and behaviour change. 🔹 Local governments play a crucial role in enabling businesses and protecting vulnerable groups. 🔗https://lnkd.in/djNRqwRd 2️⃣Financing private-sector-led energy access in informal settlements: How can we scale solutions that work for communities and investors alike? 🔹 Informal settlements remain underserved by traditional utilities, and where served/ where this energy is available, they are faced with unreliable supply and high energy costs. 🔹 Decentralised solutions like solar mini-grids and clean cooking enterprises can thrive—but lack investment. 🔹Partnerships between the private sector, government institutions, NGOs, and financial institutions are critical for energy access projects. 🔹 Innovative financing solutions are needed—such as flexible loan terms and lower interest rates tailored to energy enterprises in informal settlements. 🔗https://lnkd.in/dJk4feXC #ENACT, funded by UK Aid from the UK government via the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform and implemented by ICLEI Africa and Energy 4 Impact, supported 20,000+ people in the informal settlements of Kisenyi (Kampala) and Susan’s Bay (Freetown) in adopting clean cooking solutions. Hear from the Susan’s Bay residents in the video below. 📹💬 Let’s push for inclusive, just, and resilient urban energy solutions in Africa! At the ongoing #EnergizingHealthcare 2025 conference, we've had insightful discussions on the landscape of capital going into health facility electrification as well as the role of different sources of capital in closing financing gaps including how donor concessional capital could be deployed. The current challenges in coordination between global energy and health sectors, and in-country stakeholders was also discussed and proposals made on how different coordination mechanisms including the Health Facility Electrification Compact and the global Health and Energy Platform of Action (HEPA) could help remove the existing bottlenecks. https://lnkd.in/dMMm4PeX

👏 Congratulations to mopo (Mobile Power) on securing $7m financing with British International Investment (BII). The funding will accelerate the expansion of MOPO’s battery rental business in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - improving access to sustainable energy for households and businesses in off-grid and unreliable grid areas. Ayrton Fund programmes have supported MOPO on its journey to scale and commercialise, with projects and achievements including: 🔋 4 pilot projects supported by Energy Catalyst (an Innovate UK programme) from 2019-2023 - advancing innovative MOPO solutions in Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Plus, a project underway in Round 10 - seeking to integrate sustainable technologies to create a 'Distributed Renewable Energy System' for clean cooking, grain milling and sustainable cooling in Nigeria and DRC. 🏍 Successful testing of its e-motorbikes and battery swap model in Sierra Leone, with support from Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities. Making MOPO battery rentals flexible and accessible to provide a sustainable mode of transportation and freighting. ✨ Securing a $10m partnership with CrossBoundary Access in 2023, to provide energy access to 1.5m people in Nigeria via an innovative battery service. 🤝 Collaboration through the The Faraday Institution seed project NaBEDA - exploring sodium-ion batteries as a cost-effective sustainable alternative to lithium-ion in its MOPO batteries. ☀️ A project underway as part of the Zero Emission Generators Technology Accelerator - aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuel generators by developing solar-powered batteries. MOPO CEO Christopher Longbottom said: "MOPO’s mission has always been to become a leading provider of sustainable energy in Africa, leveraging pay-per-use battery technology. Since our inception, we’ve surpassed our 23 millionth battery rental and expanded our operations across 6 countries. This growth would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our partners, including the Transforming Energy Access platform and Energy Catalyst. Their recognition of our innovative technology and business model, along with the grant funding awarded, have been pivotal in supplementing our equity investment programs and accelerating our development. These partnerships have also significantly elevated our profile both nationally and internationally.
