We are delighted to announce an exclusive addition to our Transport + Energy Forum, which aims to harness collaboration at the forum to create a Delivery Plan for the government. Output from the day's packed agenda of presentations, debates, panel discussions and roundtable sessions will be pulled together into an insight-driven report. This Delivery Plan will showcase the necessary strategies required to turn action into real delivery and will be presented to government shortly after the forum takes place. "I look forward to learning from the forum and their Delivery Plan as my committee makes recommendations to the government throughout this parliament." RAC: reform needed to bring public charging costs down Reforms are needed to bring down the cost of public charging and ensure EVs are an attractive option for drivers who can’t charge at home, new data from RAC Charge Watch has shown. The price of using the very fastest chargers, which are relied on by drivers making journeys beyond the range of their vehicles, is virtually unchanged since the start of the year, it discovered. The average cost of a rapid pay-as-you-go charge, using chargers with power outputs between 50 and 149 kilowatts, currently stands at just under 80p per kilowatt hour (79.19p per kWh), virtually unchanged on the start of the year (79.55p) but up 4% since a year ago and up 28% on two years ago. Transport decarbonisation "urgent" to avoid climate catastrophe More than three quarters of transport planners believe the UK is not likely to reach its carbon reduction targets on the current trajectory, new research has shown. The research, conducted by engineering consultancy firm Buro Happold and the Transport Planning Society (TPS), was undertaken to coincide with Transport Planning Day. It shows that UK transport planners’ confidence that the UK will decarbonise transport quickly enough has fallen. Government urges "pragmatism" on ZEV Mandate Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said he was "bitterly disappointed" by Stellantis' decision to close the Luton plant, but that he wanted the government to be "pragmatic" on the ZEV Mandate as he officially launched a consultation. Speaking in the House of Commons, Reynolds formally announced the government's plans for a consultation on bringing forward the end date for new ICE sales to 2030. As part of the consultation, there would be the ability for "flexibility" on the ZEV Mandate. Reynolds also said that "contrived culture wars" was not "what this industry needs" and instead it "needs a partner in government ready to look at practical solutions necessary". Midlothian Council partners with Vattenfall A new energy centre from a partnership between Midlothian Council and energy firm Vattenfall will provide heat to thousands of homes. The first project, part of the Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) partnership, will supply low carbon heat to new homes through the MEL heat network that is planned to expand into existing buildings and into Edinburgh. Once connected, the MEL Energy Centre will capture low carbon heat from the Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre – an energy from waste plant operated by FCC Environment. The new centre will use captured heat to supply around 3,000 homes, education and retail properties at Shawfair Town via the heat network. Government to push ahead with ZEV Mandate consultation Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds has told the motor manufacturing industry that the government will push ahead with a short consultation on the ZEV Mandate, following discussions last week. It comes after Reynolds told MPs in front of the parliamentary Business and Trade Select Committee yesterday that he didn't believe the ZEV Mandate was working. Later, he told the SMMT annual trade dinner that the government had heard the sector "loud and clear" and would be launching a short consultation on the scheme. It came at the same time as Stellantis announced plans to shut its Luton plant and move some operations and roles to its Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire, where it plans to invest £50m. Levistor develops commercial energy storage trial British company Levistor is developing high-power, durable energy storage technology that will enable super-fast charging of electric vehicles. It is to undertake its first commercial product trials at National Highways’ test and development centre at Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire. The trial, to be conducted alongside batteries and solar installations, will start early next year. It will run alongside National Highways’ existing programme of work to invest in energy storage systems that can support electric vehicle (EV) charging on the UK’s motorway network, in particular where the existing grid network infrastructure cannot support super-fast, high-powered EV charging.
