  • Winter in the Caledonian forest ❄️ From biting winds and deep snow to freezing rain, the forest can be a challenging place to live throughout winter. Among the treetops, red squirrels build cosy nests, known as dreys. Made from twigs, leaves, moss, feathers, and other soft materials, these nests provide essential protection from winter storms. Rewilding helps ensure that vital habitats and homes for wildlife like these don’t disappear. By restoring nature, we’re creating safe spaces and refuges for Scotland’s incredible wildlife. 🌳🐿️ [Image Description: A photo of a red squirrel on a snowy tree trunk.] #Wildlife #Highlands #Squirrel #Winter #Nest

  • Lynx could return to Scotland – but not through unwelcome illegal releases As part of the Lynx to Scotland partnership working to restore lynx to the Scottish Highlands, we welcome the humane capture of two lynx illegally released in the Cairngorms National Park. Lynx are a native keystone species, vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems, but were made extinct in Scotland through hunting and habitat loss over 500 years ago. Research shows that the Highlands could sustainably support around 400 lynx. Currently, a cross-sector range of stakeholders are engaging in discussions about the possibility of a responsibly managed and fully resourced legal reintroduction of lynx. • Spotting silver birch in winter ❄️ Save this post for your next nature adventure! 🍂 Once the leaves are gone, identifying trees like silver birch in the Caledonian forest can be tricky – but here’s what to look for: 💙 Delicate, drooping branches 💙 Bright, paper-like silver bark 💙 Fissured and textured bark on old trees 🗺 Bonus tip: Look for birch names on maps! The Gaelic word for birch, beithe, appears in places like Glen an Beithe in Argyll and Allt Beithe in Glen Affric.
