Empowering Inclusion: Human-Centered Design for Sustainable Solutions – Uplifting Street Children
Streetism remains a critical social issue in Ghana, particularly in peri-urban and urban areas like Accra. Every day, along major highways and city streets, children as young as five are seen hawking goods, wandering, or begging just to survive.
Deprived of basic rights such as education, shelter, healthcare, and protection, these children are caught in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
Ensuring their rights is not just a moral duty it is a legal obligation under both international human rights laws and Ghana’s national policies. Yet, the numbers tell a dire story.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, 1,215,546 children between the ages of 4 and 17 were out of school. Data from the Department of Social Welfare further reveals that 61,492 children are growing up on the streets. These alarming statistics highlight the urgency of tackling streetism as a national crisis.
In alignment with the 2025 Global Theme for World Day of Social Justice, “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice,” we explore how human-centred design can create sustainable solutions that restore dignity, provide opportunities, and empower street children for a brighter future.
