What I Learned From 100 African Founders Last year, as Founder Care Lead at TVCLabs, I asked 100 of our founders about their top three biggest challenges. The goal? To truly understand the day-to-day struggles they face and design our programs and services with their needs in mind. Going through their responses was an eye-opener. It made me realize that if these challenges kept coming up repeatedly, then other aspiring entrepreneurs needed to hear about them too. The first major challenge—no surprises here—was securing capital and becoming investment-ready💸 With the intense revenue and traction requirements from VCs, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for founders to secure adequate investments. Those turning to grants also face significant bottlenecks. How can we better support founders in overcoming these financial hurdles? The second most frequently mentioned issue—and one we didn’t expect to see so often—was corporate governance, legal, and compliance. Many early-stage founders, in their eagerness to get started, made mistakes in how they distributed ownership of their companies, often ending up with major shareholders who contributed little to the business. Keeping up with our dynamic regulatory environment is also a big issue. It became clear how important it is to educate founders on building strong boards, handling legal matters, and staying compliant. Lastly, business development was a consistent struggle—finding effective ways to market and sell products, attract the right partners, and win new customers. So, what do you think? How can we better support African founders in tackling these challenges? We at TVCLabs are open to investors and partners looking to support our founders and the broader ecosystem. 📸 taken at my time in Doha, Qatar. #startups #investing #Venturecapital #investing
