It was a pleasure to spend some time with our partners at the TransCap Initiative and others building the field of investing for systems change. Looking forward to working together to address some of these opportunities and challenges. Better Society Capital Prime Coalition
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. Especially when the work is to reimagine the way financing is purposed, designed, and managed. To make money a transformative force in building a low-carbon, climate-resilient, just, and inclusive society. It’s not easy work. So it’s critical to build and nurture a space that one of our #community described as feeling like “they are not alone in rowing upstream and against the current”. In an unexpectedly hot pub this London Climate Action Week, we gathered a group of #SystemicInvesting pioneers to do just that. Here’s a taste of some of the key topics that came out of our discussions: ⛯ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞. Despite how compelling this agenda feels to many people within our community, most investors are at the beginning of the impact journey. This is evidenced by both actual AUM, but also conversations that people in the field are having with their networks. We need new investment practices and instruments, but we also need to ensure we seed the next wave of asset managers who are fluent in systemic investing. 🔗𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. The challenge of bringing together different types of capital – especially public finance, return-seeking investment capital, and philanthropic capital – came up again and again. We have to break down silos and create spaces to connect actors that need to interact (but don't necessarily do so on a regular basis) to really have a chance at delivering lasting impact. 👌🏽𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. We need to use language that these different actors can understand, and in some cases do the work of translation. We have to be able to articulate how our work fits with existing practices, rather than forcing others to understand and use our terminology. ⚙️𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥. We have to get into the nitty-gritty details of systemic investing and figure out how to engineer new investment models and bring them into the world – despite the fact that there is no guidebook on how to do that. This includes designing in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion effectively. (Watch this space for our Design Guide, which we’ll be releasing in stages from the Fall onwards). We’ll be feeding the insights from these discussions into our work. Thank you to all those who joined us. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. #LCAW2024 +++++++++ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑝 𝐼𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑛𝑜𝑛-𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔. A great overview of the levers for investing for systems change that Alban Yau identified in his research at the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative based on the first 26 TWIST: Investing for Systems Change case studies. We’d love to hear how these resonate with you. Which levers do you use in your work investing for systems change?
Just a few decades ago, impact investing existed mainly on the fringes. Now it's a global market estimated at $30.3 trillion. It’s a start, but investors who want to generate lasting change need to do more than invest in single companies, said Alban Yau, a graduate research assistant in the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative. What’s needed is systemic investing — a new approach that embraces systems transformation, deploys capital with a broader intent, and replaces a project-by-project mentality with new methodologies, structures, capabilities, and decision-making frameworks. Yau analyzed case studies and research on socio-technical transitions and social systems change, and he arrived at nine key levers that investors can pull in combination to best create systemic change. https://lnkd.in/ePGQnVMV

Exactly two years since TWIST: Investing for Systems Change was born at Katapult Future Fest – a gathering of changemakers, investors, entrepreneurs, artists, and researchers – members of the community of practice came together again in Oslo. It was powerful to reflect on how our collective has grown and contributed to the field of investing for systems change. We kicked off the week collaborating with the Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth (CSP) North America on their new capacity building programme, Investing for Systems Change, with partners TransCap Initiative, MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, Meridian Institute, The ImPact, and Tara Health Foundation. We then spent time together as a community of practice at The Conduit Oslo where we heard from Alban Yau on the findings from his research at the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative using the first 26 case studies from the TWIST: Investing for Systems Change community of practice. Daniel Almagor and Kaj Lofgren from Small Giants Academy and Regen Melbourne shared learnings and wisdom of what it can look like to invest for systems change in practice. We finished our time together with a powerful reflection on the inner work that accompanies the outer work from TWIST: Investing for Systems Change steering committee members Lisa Kleissner, Nicolas Branas Michaelsen, Karl "Charly" Kleissner, and Philipp Essl. TWIST: Investing for Systems Change Managing Director and Katapult Foundation CEO, Alison Fort opened Investor Day and welcomed us into the room highlighting the importance of an investing for systems change approach as we face the polycrisis. She was joined onstage by Jason Jay, Director of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative and TWIST: Investing for Systems Change Steering Committee member, for a panel on "Transformative Investment Strategies: Redefining Impact Beyond Investing and Singular Solutions" with Cilia Holmes Indahl, Paul Ziesche, and Wietse Van Der Werf. In the afternoon, Alison Fort, Alban Yau and Jason Jay led a workshop called "Twists and Turns: The Systemic Revolution in Finance." Participants were invited to share their work with each other using a systems change canvas identifying their system boundaries, stakeholders, leverage points, and polycapital strategies. With a huge turnout and deep engagement from the room, we came out energised by the traction and interest in the practice of investing for systems change. As we reflect on our time together, we are deeply grateful to everyone who engaged and shared. We move forward, together, with energy and commitment for investing for systems change. What’s next?
