How can we bridge the the gap between academia and policy making? 🤔 Academia and policymaking often operate in silos, yet collaboration between the two is crucial for evidence-based decisions that address real-world challenges. Earlier last month I took part in the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) Doctorial Training Academy hosted in the European Commission in Prague 🇨🇿 One of the big discussions I kept having as someone who is a practitioner (working in the UK Civil Service ) and as an early career researcher (at UCL UCL SSEES) how sometimes these worlds feel like on opposite side of the world. It can be incredibly challenging being a practitioner and an academic, which I am. However I would argue they are two sides of the same coin and we have much to learn from both worlds and communities. How can we bridge this divide? 3 Takeaways for Better Collaboration: 1️⃣ Speak on the Same Frequency : Academics should translate research into concise, actionable insights, while policymakers can better articulate the evidence they need. 2️⃣ Build Relationships Early: Ongoing dialogue between researchers and decision-makers ensures timely and relevant input. 3️⃣ Reward Policy Impact: Academic institutions should value policy contributions, and governments should create structures to integrate research into decision-making. How do you think we can create more effective partnerships between researchers and policymakers? Let’s discuss! #PublicPolicy #InternationalAffairs #Diplomacy #Academia #EarlyCareersResearcher

👩🏫 Last week, I had another great opportunity to gain insights in the academic field. This time, we focused on teaching at the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) Doctoral Training Academy titled "Navigating the Academic Landscape: Mastering Teaching and Research Balance in European Studies," hosted by the European Commission Representation in Prague. I want to thank all the participants for their valuable advice. I will definitely try to apply their insights in my (hopefully) future teaching.

'Rethinking Europe’s East-West Divide in the Age of Geopolitics’ UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) theme track at UACES Conference in Liverpool 🇬🇧 Recent shifts in global competition, closely linked to geopolitical strategies, pose significant challenges to European integration. In an increasingly Geotech world, competition over innovation, resources and influence has challenged the European Union’s international standing and economic model. However, the EU’s quest for strategic autonomy also provides opportunities for advancing European integration and has shaped the development of wide range of EU policies including enlargement, new industrial policy, and defence and security. This track seeks and ask: What has been the role of CEE in shaping policy developments and what agency do CEE countries have to influence the EU’s way forward? How have current geopolitical realignments impacted domestic politics in CEE and how do the politics of CEE states in turn shape EU policy. We invite different contributions to unpack these challenges and discuss how to rethink Europe’s East-West Divide in the changing geopolitical context: Link for proposals: https://lnkd.in/dy3SPMts

Last weekend marked the end of my two-year term with the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) Graduate Forum’s Doctoral Training Academy in Prague, where I served as Communications Officer and Interim Chair. Among the many cherished memories, the greatest joy has been meeting numerous graduate students and early career researchers (ECRs) in European Studies, whom I hope to collaborate with as colleagues for many years. You can also read my blog post about my experience: https://lnkd.in/eyyThT-m This incredible experience would not have been possible without the immense support of Kerry Cole Ollie Pilkington, Katie Kilbourne, the outstanding office team, and my beloved committee members Elena Şimanschi Filiz Doğan, Ph.D Roberto Baccarini, and of course, my Belfast guide and ex-colleague at GF Niall Robb. I try not to miss anyone too much, and hopefully, we will be together at future events.
