Sometimes, I’m the one who actually learns from my students! Simon Levy has shown that investors can use art as a valuable way to diversify their portfolios. He created his own index to track the performance of the top 100 artists, using over 80,000 transaction data points, and demonstrated that allocating 20% to blue-chip art can increase risk-adjusted returns by ~20%, all while maintaining S&P 500-level volatility. I’m genuinely impressed by the creativity of students from UCL Arts and Sciences (UASc) and the UCL Institute of Finance & Technology.
I am excited to share this study (also now on SSRN). We introduce the Arte-Blue Chip Index, tracking 100 top artists across 81,891 transactions (1990–2024). This index demonstrates that allocating 20% to blue-chip art can boost risk-adjusted returns by ~20% while maintaining S&P 500-level volatility. With Maxime Nicolas, we have refined this framework to integrate art into portfolio strategies, leveraging real-time simulations and adapted techniques to address illiquidity and meet the growing demand for financially driven art investments.
