I was completely blown away when I had the privilege of seeing Smart Green Shipping's first wing sail installed on the Pacific Grebe. I learnt that when coupled with FastRoute software, there is so much potential for reduced energy consumption, lower costs, and a reduction in CO2 emissions. And if they weren't good enough reasons, they look so cool too thanks to the design talents of Lorne Stree Primary School. From an emissions perspective, shipping is a hard-to-abate sector and we will need a range of solutions. We are all dependent upon shipping including my profession, healthcare which would soon cease to function in a world without ships. We cannot live without the shipping industry so we all need to work with them, showing our support for innovation and real solutions. Our health is dependent upon that of the ocean and I welcome all steps which reduce emissions (and other impacts). This a positive step forward so from me personally, a huge thanks to the wonderful Di Gilpin and her team, at Smart Green Shipping (https://lnkd.in/dqPGhUt). The Plankton Manifesto - A call for Plankton-Based Solutions to address The Triple Planetary Crisis (biodiversity, climate & pollution) Despite their immense importance, plankton are under threat and remain poorly understood. The Plankton Manifesto calls for immediate global recognition and action to protect these vital organisms. It advocates for the adoption of "Plankton-Based Solutions" to benefit humanity and the environment, leveraging advances in DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, satellite monitoring, AI-assisted image analysis, and other cutting-edge technologies to enhance our understanding and stewardship of plankton. The Plankton Manifesto is a result of a collaborative effort, led by the United Nations Global Compact, that involved 30 international experts from leading institutions and industries worldwide. It will seek endorsements at key global environmental conferences, including COP29 on Climate, COP16 on Biodiversity, and the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, in June 2025. https://lnkd.in/eeZZvt5M

📢 Just published: The report "Ambition, Action, Impact: the Ocean Decade Pathway to 2030 - Consolidated Outcomes of the Vision 2030 Process" identifies science, knowledge, capacity, resources, and infrastructure priorities that are needed to achieve a successful Ocean Decade. The #OceanDecade aims to transform the way that ocean science and knowledge is generated and used, and thus precipitate a shift from the ocean we have to the ocean we want by 2030. The Vision 2030 process, implemented over a period of twelve months in the lead-up to the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, was centred around the ten Ocean Decade Challenges – which represent the most immediate and pressing needs for ocean knowledge – as a participatory and iterative process aimed at setting a tailored and specific strategic ambition, or ‘end goal’, and associated milestones for each Challenge. ➡️ Launched at the #AAORIAForum2024 today, this report summarises the key findings and outcomes of this process, and outlines a pathway to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want by 2030. Download it here: https://lnkd.in/grntB9WS 🤝 We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Vision 2030 Working Group members for their invaluable contributions to this important Ocean Decade process.
