Our mission is to be the best performing international flag.

About us

The UK Ship Register (UKSR) is a flag of quality which maintains the highest standards making sure the vessels registered under the UK Flag adhere to the safety and environmental requirements. It offers 24/7 service through Customer Account Managers and Customer Service Managers that are assigned to our clients. There is also a duty surveyor available out of hours to assist when a client requires it. UKSR is currently implementing the necessary changes to be more customer and commercially focused. Through partnership with shipowners, it is working towards Safer Lives, Safer Ships, and Cleaner Seas. It is one of the best performing flags in the major Port State Control regimes, supported by its position on the Paris and Tokyo MoU White Lists. It is also included on the US Coast Guard Qualship 21 Initiative which recognises high-quality ships and encourages outstanding operations. UK Flagged vessels are rarely targeted for Port State Control inspections as the UK Flag meets Paris MoU flag criteria for low risk ships. The UK Ship Register is part of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

Youngsters’ eyes were opened to future careers at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) during an event at the University of Aberdeen promoting jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Among other organisations, school pupils aged 10-14 had the chance to meet civil servants from the MCA, including Sivadasan Idiyath and Shubham Chowdhury from the local Marine Office. Together with MCA Business Support Manager Cris Treacher, Siva and Shubham explained what they do, how they help to keep people safe at sea using STEM skills, and the technology that is deployed by their colleagues all around the UK. During the event on 9 January they answered questions at the MCA stand and hosted group workshops – where HM Coastguard teddy bear prizes proved popular. Challenges included working on a plan of a fishing vessel to identify STEM related equipment or activities on board. Together they lifted the lid on life and learning at the MCA to about 260 youngsters. Cris said: “It is important to show there are jobs crucial to implementing and promoting safety throughout the organisation, including HM Coastguard, with STEM at their heart, so it’s good for us to join this kind of event and show them off to the next generation. “It was great to explain to youngsters what technology we use to keep people safe in many different – and sometimes surprising – ways. “Pupils are too young for a job, of course, but I hope we opened their eyes to the possibilities and skills they could choose as they grow up.” #Maritime #STEM #Careers

  • For most Christmas is a time for celebration, family and making memories.  For seafarers the Christmas season is business as usual – following the same duties and routine. It is important at this time of year that we show our appreciation and gratitude for their service. While we’re at home enjoying the festivities, seafarers are often away from loved ones in what can be challenging and isolating conditions, ensuring the movement of global trade and essentials continues throughout. Without seafarers Christmas would be completely different. This is a special thank you at Christmas to the nation’s seafarers.

Today is National Workplace Day of Remembrance, an important opportunity for teams across the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to pay tribute to those working to improve safety for those employed on the coast and at sea.  For the MCA, the date is an occasion to pay tribute to people working across the maritime sector to improve seafarer safety – from those working in HM Coastguard Operations and Search and Rescue, to ship surveyors, coastguard rescue officers and enforcement teams. MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea said: “National Workplace Day of Remembrance memorialises those who’ve tragically lost their lives during employment, or while at work.  “The date also highlights the importance of work taking place across the country to improve safety. There are many roles across our industry that specifically focus on and tackle maritime risks and dangers, but it’s a job for all of us.  “Through being strong supporters and advocates for safer working practices, clear advice, guidance and messaging, and where necessary, strict enforcement, we can all play a role in shaping safety policy and minimising danger.” On National Workplace Day of Remembrance, the public is invited to observe a minute’s silence at midday to honour those who have lost their lives at work.
