About us
As the UK’s national fusion lab, the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s mission is to lead the commercial development of fusion power and related technology, and position the UK as a leader in sustainable fusion energy. We are meeting the scientific and engineering challenges that come with such a grand ambition. UKAEA is made up of four main facilities: Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE), Materials Research Facility (MRF), and - in partnership with STFC - the Oxfordshire Advanced Skills (OAS) apprentice training centre. As part of CCFE, we operate the world’s largest fusion device – the Joint European Torus, or JET – on behalf of the European fusion consortium EUROfusion. Connect with us to hear more about our world-class research and career opportunities and to discuss commercial opportunities.

MAST Upgrade is the UK’s national fusion experiment. The device is based on the original MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) machine, which ran from 2000 to 2013. It has been rebuilt to enable higher performance – longer pulses, increased heating power and a stronger magnetic field. MAST-U particularly focuses on plasma exhaust – a key issue that must be solved to achieve commercial fusion power - to learn more about this, visit https://lnkd.in/eHJ34W7e MAST-U is exploring the route to compact fusion power plants, testing technology and addressing physics issues for the international ITER fusion project. It keeps the UK at the forefront of global research into fusion energy. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero l #worldnuclearenergyday

The world’s first fusion energy-themed café was officially inaugurated today, marking a milestone in public engagement with fusion energy science and technology. The Fusion Energy Café, located within The Bridge Skills Hub, Worksop, aims to raise awareness and increase knowledge of fusion energy in a welcoming setting. Featuring interactive displays, themed décor, nourishing refreshments, and guest talks, the space serves as a platform to inspire interest in fusion energy. It showcases fusion energy as a sustainable, low carbon energy solution while highlighting its potential as a transformative technology for the future. Fusion is set to become a key industry for the area with the planned construction of the STEPtoFusion (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) prototype fusion plant at the West Burton site. The Cafe’s opening is part of a broader effort to engage the local community in the programme, which will create skills development opportunities and jobs for local people. The opening ceremony was led by Climate Minister, Kerry mccarthy, who said: “The Fusion Energy Café is a fantastic way to inspire a whole generation to learn more about this groundbreaking technology and its potential to deliver safe, sustainable, and low-carbon energy, helping us in our fight against climate change. “This initiative, inspired by the development of the STEP prototype power plant at West Burton, will not only help to drive progress in clean energy but also bring valuable skills, jobs, and investment to the area.” Cllr Jonathan Slater, Deputy Leader at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “We are delighted to be working collaboratively with our partners on this groundbreaking venture to raise awareness and knowledge about the opportunities that fusion energy, science, and technology will bring to our communities." The Fusion Energy Café is funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) and North Notts BID Business Improvement District (NNBID). In addition to showcasing fusion energy, the Café will provide work placements for individuals with disabilities, those not currently in education, employment, or training (NEET), and individuals who have been long-term unemployed. The Fusion Energy Café is proudly operated by local entrepreneur, Diana Kaponas. Nick Walkden, Head of Fusion Skills at UKAEA, said: “We are proud to be working with Bassetlaw District Council and North Notts Business Improvement District on this unique and exciting community-focused initiative in Worksop." Sally Gillborn MBE, Chief Executive at North Notts BID, said: “The opening of the Fusion Energy Café delivers on the commitment we outlined in our 2022-2027 business plan to create a community cafe that will provide hands-on hospitality skills development and working experience for people with learning difficulties. UK Atomic Energy Authority reposted this
⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡ Yesterday I was like the proverbial child in a sweet shop / candy store! Alongside Energy Institute President Andy Brown OBE and Technical & Innovation Director Martin Maeso, I had the pleasure of visiting UK Atomic Energy Authority at Culham, including a visit to the world's first and longest-running fusion facility (JET). The work being undertaken by UK Atomic Energy Authority is truly extraordinary and world leading. Beyond working on commercialising fusion energy, the team are undertaking incredible work on materials science, advanced robotics and computer simulation. All of this is genuine UK leadership and testament to the team led so ably by Prof Ian Chapman. A HUGE thank you to Tim Bestwick, Celestine Cheong, Nick Sykes, Nick Holloway, Valerie Jamieson, Prof Amy Gandy, James Cowan and Fernanda Rimini for hosting us and sharing your expertise. The Energy Institute looks forward to supporting your incredible work, alongside Sustainable Markets Initiative
