Congratulations to our Chair and Director, Neil Dickins, who has deservedly been honoured with the ‘Contribution to Industry’ Award at the TechWorks Awards this evening.   We are a small charity with a big impact, and his involvement and vision has been invaluable to the UKESF over the past 10 years.   We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Neil for his continued support.

Tonight, we’re excited to be hosting guests at the TechWorks Gala Dinner and Awards. Alongside our UKESF table, we will also be celebrating the achievements of our 'Girls into Electronics' programme with a dedicated table, as thanks to those who have helped us to support an increasing number of young women into the industry.   Good luck to our two finalists for the Scholar of the Year Award, Philip Heptonstall, The University of Edinburgh / AMD, and Henry Wall, University of Cambridge / Multiple Access Communications Ltd.   And we also would like to send our best wishes to our two graduated Scholars, Oana Lazar and Henry Sands-Grant, who have been shortlisted for TechWorks Young Engineer of the Year! We look forward to seeing many of our friends, collaborators and supporters this evening.

For those not familiar with the multi award winning UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) Scholarship Scheme, it's essentially a new talent 'agency' for our sector. We source exceptional undergraduates from our partner universities and nurture them in a number of ways. By matching our UKESF Scholars to sponsor companies they are able to gain invaluable industry experience whilst still at university. Giving employers the opportunity to try before they buy. Many of our scholars are offered permanent positions by their sponsor company, which start when they finish their degrees. We also provide professional development, networking and outreach opportunities. Earlier this week, Andy Gothard spoke at the ARMMS RF and Microwave Society Conference about the talent pipeline in the Electronics industry, and what can be done to address the skills shortage.   Speaking about the event, Andy said:   “It was great to have so many positive conversations about the ways in which we can develop the next generation with the skills needed in the UK Electronics industry. It was fantastic to spend time with such an engaged community that is so passionate about engineering. Our CEO, Stewart Edmondson is at the Global Semiconductor Conference in Malta, where this morning he participated in a panel discussion about 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀, chaired by Dr Andy G Sellars FIET and joined by John Goodenough, Graham Curren, Stephen Sammut. and Romano Hoofman, PhD, PMP. Reflecting on the panel, Stewart said: “It was fascinating to hear to different pan-European perspectives from the other panellists about the skills challenges in the semiconductor industry. Whilst individual companies can take short-term measures to address their shortages, it is clear that concerted effort is needed to create a future pipeline for the wider economy-system. Critical to this effort is raising awareness and attracting more young people to our industry. Happy National Engineering Day! At the UKESF, our charitable purpose is to encourage more young people to study Electronics and to pursue careers in the sector. We are working tirelessly to ensure that more young people are aware of Electronics, and we are part of a wider ecosystem of organisations that are working together to inspire the next generation with STEM.
