About us
Launched in 1997, the UKQAA is a Trade Body that represents members involved in the supply or use of fly ash from pulverised coal fired power stations. It is well known that coal fired power production in the UK is expected to cease by 2025. Indeed, most stations will be closed well before this date. This has meant that both suppliers and users of fly ash are currently evaluating their future strategy and options. The UKQAA is working with key stakeholders including the Environment Agency and Planners to safeguard these strategic reserves as well as funding research into understanding the properties of landfilled fly ashes. The UKQAA represents UK producers and users of coal-fired power station ash products and promotes the application and use of quality ash. We provide technical, environmental, educational, scientific and legal expertise on the use of coal ash products and can help you get the right product for the right application.

Engaging with our international collaborative network today in Tbilisi, Georgia 🇬🇪 Our Director Nigel Cooke and Executive & Technical Committee member representing Power Minerals Limited, Ivan Skidmore who is also a board member of ECOBA ORG attended the 77th ECOBA General Assembly meeting. Reporting back to our members on activity at a European and Global level is important to diseminate knowledge and experience, promote and protect the future for these essential anthropogenic minerals for sustainable use in construction and building materials.
The 77th ECOBA meeting has been kindly hosted by our new members ARAG the Anthropogenic Resource Association of Georgia 🇬🇪 in Tbilisi on 13/14 November. We thank our members across Europe who made the effort to come and experience this amazing cultural capital city of Georgia. We continue to discuss and share knowledge on the advancement of CCP’s around the world.

The UK is a market of interest with over 15Mt of Cement and Supplementary Cementitious Materials consumed per annum with a significant proportion served via Imports. The United Kingdom Quality Ash Association (UKQAA) consists of a membership of importers, producers, end users and technology companies with a vested interest in the supply chain for Quality Ash. Dr. Nigel Cooke will be providing a talk at #ASHTRANS2024 on the latest UK developments in a global context. He was appointed Director of the UKQAA in June 2017. Nigel has more than 30 years’ experience in the building materials sector, including time spent at Blue Circle Industries and Lafarge. During his time with Blue Circle and Lafarge, he was seconded to business units in Singapore, Malaysia, Chile, and Switzerland. He also spent 2 years at the Lafarge HQ in Paris working on Group cementitious strategy. So alongside his current role focused on Quality Ash he also has a wealth of knowledge in the wider sector. His first experience with Coal Derived Fly Ash (CDFA) was when he was Executive Director for Supermix Concrete Malaysia though, over the period 1999 to 2010 whilst in the UK, he was responsible for developing CDFA partnerships with ScottishPower (ScotAsh), RWE (CelticAsh) and EDF (ProAsh). In addition to numerous environmental accolades, ScotAsh won two Queens Awards for Innovation and the Environment.
