UKSPA is the UK’s national association for Science & Technology Parks, Incubators & other Innovation Locations.
About us
The mission of UKSPA is to be the authoritative body on the planning, development and the creation of Science Parks and other innovation locations that are facilitating the development and management of innovative, high growth, knowledge-based organisations. A Science Park is a business support and technology transfer initiative that: encourages and supports the start up and incubation of innovation-led, high-growth, knowledge-based businesses.provides an environment where larger and international businesses can develop specific and close interactions with a particular centre of knowledge creation for their mutual benefit.has formal and operational links with centres of knowledge creation such as universities, higher education institutes and research organisations. THE HISTORY OF UKSPA Founded in 1984 by the managers of the eight Parks that then existed, UKSPA has gone from strength to strength. In the last forty years the number of Science Parks has grown significantly (from two in 1982 to around 150 in 2024). There is still a strong regional, and local focus to their establishment. What has continued to happen over the years is that many more UK Universities and centres of excellence in research have recognised the unstoppable trend, and inherent value of Science Park development and have created parks with associated management structures to help drive and technology up the value chain by supporting tenant companies across a wide range of activities. THE GROWTH OF UKSPA Over the course of the last forty years there has been continual growth in membership. In 2024 - the 40th Anniversary of the Association - over 140 locations were in membership, delivering facilities and support to over 6000 companies.

📢 We're thrilled to unveil the Babraham Research Campus Impact Report 2023/24 that reveals the tangible impact we are delivering across the Campus community, within the Cambridge Cluster and beyond. 🚀The research updates findings from 2019 and demonstrates exceptional growth in economic contributions, job creation, and ground-breaking discoveries. Key findings include: 💥 £3.15bn - the collective valuation of Campus companies 💥 £538m - the annual economic contribution to the local economy (up 89% on 2019) 💥 £1.6bn - the commercial investment in Campus companies collectively to date 💥 9,400 - the number of people employed with 2,000 based on Campus 💥 3.9:1 - every £1 the taxpayer has invested into Campus via UKRI–BBSRC has returned £3.90. But, as our CEO Derek Jones puts it, it's not just about the numbers. "It’s about the ripple effects these successes have on innovation, health outcomes, and economic prosperity." Congratulations to all involved.
Tech Foundry is officially open. Last week, Olly Glover, MP for Didcot and Wantage, officially opened Tech Foundry, our latest development designed to supercharge the growth of the technology, manufacturing, and life sciences sectors. Spanning nearly 150,000 sq. ft, Tech Foundry 1 and 2 are cutting-edge facilities offering advanced manufacturing and R&D spaces, further cementing Harwell Campus as a hub for innovation. Part of our ambitious 600 Initiative, these buildings are the first step in delivering an additional 600,000 sq. ft of collaboration and innovation space, propelling the region’s reputation as a leader in science and technology. Olly Glover MP shared at the event: "The opening of Tech Foundry marks a significant milestone in positioning our region as a leader in science and technology. I look forward to seeing the Campus and its members drive economic and societal impact." Our own Daniel Pagella, Senior Director of Asset Management, added: "Tech Foundry is designed to help businesses turn ideas into reality more quickly. We’re excited to support our community as they develop technologies that benefit us all." This momentous occasion follows last week’s opening of the National Quantum Computing Centre by the Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Lord Vallance, a testament to Harwell Campus’ role in shaping the UK’s scientific future. Last month we were delighted to announce that Sci-Tech Daresbury won the inaugural Future of Work award at the UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association 40th Anniversary Awards. This award recognises the campus’s commitment to both: Inspire the next generation of talent through the public engagement activities that have been carried out across the North West by STFC and Sci-Tech Daresbury 🔬🤖⚙️🧮 Deliver our RADAR strategy by supporting our businesses to help attract, develop and retain the talent they need👩💻✨👨💻✨ This has helped the percentage of campus companies seeing their business growth constrained by a lack of talent to be less than half of the UK average.
