Achyuth Anil and I argue that CPTPP does not constrain UK ambitions to negotiate an SPS Agreement: https://lnkd.in/ebYW4Qn2

A UK-EU SPS agreement, which the Labour government has promised to pursue, would likely result in at least some alignment of regulation in SPS areas: human, animal and plant life and health. However, can the CPTPP prevent the UK from concluding an Agreement with the EU? Emily Lydgate and Achyuth Anil argue that it cannot. 🌎 New Zealand conclusively proves that it is indeed possible to be a CPTPP party and also have an EU veterinary agreement. Its EU veterinary agreement reduces the incidence of border checks in a few areas on animal products. However, such a light agreement (New Zealand, which exports few products to the EU and from 18,000 kilometres away) would hardly resolve the border barriers facing UK farmers. ➡️ So the question is, would the CPTPP prevent the UK from negotiating a deeper agreement? https://lnkd.in/eTCtYNAD #UKTPO #CPTPP #UKtrade #InternationalTrade

What does the new GPSR mean for small businesses? A complicated challenge says Sahana Suraj in this new blog written in collaboration with Peter Holmes. ➡️ The objective of the GPSR is to safeguard consumers in the EU against potentially dangerous products. All small businesses selling online or through mail order must now have an Authorised Representative based in the EU or Northern Ireland. ➡️ Micro and small-sized businesses are likely to be especially affected, as they often specialise in niche production, catering to highly specific and smaller market segments. Navigating the GPSR presents significant challenges for these small businesses. To help these enterprises succeed, a multifaceted approach is needed. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVW4NxHH

How do investment zones and freeports work? On the latest Trade Bites podcast - produced by Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP) - UKTPO Peter Holmes joins Steve Fothergill, Anna Jerzewska, PhD and Kevin McKenzie for an in-depth conversation around investment zones and freeports. ➡️ Did you know that there are now 12 new style freeports in the UK, set up under the previous Conservative government? There are also 8 regional investment zones in the UK with the promise of more to come. This episode investigates whether they make sense as a way of kick-starting economic activity and driving trade-based growth. 👉 Are investment zones and freeports actually making a positive difference? There has been some discussion over the last few days and in particular today about the implications of the EU's General Product Safety Regulation - which came into force today. The concern is that the new regulation is likely to increase the regulatory burden for UK firm in exporting to the EU, AND, the burden for GB firms exporting to Northern Ireland. See our blog which explain why there is genuine ground for such concerns. https://lnkd.in/eJwsJ8pv

We have launched a major independent review of the state of UK trade policy. The aim is to provide an impartial, comprehensive overview of UK trade policy. Have your say by 7th Feb 2025 here ➡️ citp.ac.uk/uktpr 👉 This review will be published in September and is intended to complement the one being undertaken by the World Trade Organization (WTO), which will report on its findings in autumn 2025. The WTO review process is extensive but tends to be largely descriptive with little commentary or analysis. 👉 Our review will analyse the effectiveness of policy and policy levers and coherence across policy areas, discussing strategic objectives and priorities, and it will be explicitly inclusive of the experience of all those affected by the government’s trade policy. 👉 In the spirit of inclusiveness, we are very keen to seek input from all those with interest and experience of trade and trade policy and all those affected by the UK Government’s trade policy.
