Cut out cutting your calories ‼️ Elite athletes often focus on achieving the "right" weight for performance, especially in endurance sports like running, swimming, and cycling. Many reduce their food intake before competitions, believing weight loss enhances performance. However, this can be harmful, especially for female athletes. A study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen found that insufficient caloric intake led to a 7.7% reduction in cycling performance and weakened the immune system, causing increased cortisol levels and stress on immune cells. Despite attempts to reverse the effects through short-term refeeding, performance remained impaired, particularly in women, who are more vulnerable to low energy availability. Causes include muscle strains, poor posture, heavy lifting injuries, sudden movements or sedentary lifestyles. Symptoms include stiffness, limited range of motion, and sharp or aching pain in the lower back. While it can be debilitating, most cases resolve within six weeks with physical therapy, heat/cold therapy, and gentle exercises.
