About us
The Ulysses Trust was borne out of a ground-breaking attempt in 1992 by the Territorial Army to achieve the first British winter ascent of Mt Everest (Project DARC STAR), led by Lt Col Philip Neame whilst commanding 10 PARA. A number of organizations who were approached for financial support proffered the view that the project was too fraught with risk for commercial sponsorship, but that they would be prepared to contribute funds through charitable donations. Philip took the hint, and the Ulysses Trust was formed, taking its name from Tennyson’s inspiring poem about the great ancient Greek warrior and adventurer. HRH the Prince of Wales, already a Patron of the expedition, agreed to become the Trust’s Patron. The thought was always that Project DARC STAR (with the Team by then drawn from reservists of all 3 services) might attract enough interest to create a surplus that could then be ploughed back into supporting future projects by reservists. In the 30 years since it was established, the Trust has provided over £3.6 million funding support to over 41,000 reservists and cadets variously participating in over 3,030 expeditions to worldwide locations. The Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales, number: 1170600.

Fantastic post from our expert advisor to The Ulysses Trust - highlighting the fact that confidence and resilience is born out of challenge and adventure - which is exactly why we do what we do - giving grants to ensure that these life changing opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance. Thank you Belinda Kirk !
Explorer & Researcher. Founder #AdventureMind & #ExplorersConnect. Wrote the book that explains the psychology of why adventure is essential to our wellbeing.
The adventure that changed the course of my life wasn’t one of the international expeditions I’m perhaps best known for, it was in fact during three days of getting lost in a national park in Britain. As a teenager I didn’t feel I was good enough; I was too fat, too ugly, too unpopular. My low self-esteem was the result of having suffered from episodes of violent abuse in my own childhood. But that timid sixteen year old caught a break. I heard about a youth development programme that included an adventurous challenge, so I signed up with three friends. Thriving on my first micro-expedition in the British countryside gave me evidence to support the possibility that I might be capable of more than I had ever thought. This is probably the greatest gift you can give to any young person as they start their journey into adulthood. Today one of the greatest challenges our young people face is a lack of confidence in themselves - and in the world. So last year I shared this story and the science behind it in a TEDx talk on how to build confidence in children and young people through outdoor adventure. I’ll share my TEDx talk with you soon. In the meantime let’s celebrate the organisations getting young people outdoors. I’ll tag some of the ones I've been involved with below but please do let me know of other organisations in this space so I can champion them via my talk over the next few months British Exploring Society Youth Adventure Trust The Duke of Edinburgh's Award The Outward Bound Trust Girlguiding @thescoutassociation #BuildConfidenceThroughAdventure #adventuremind #confidentkidsarehappykids #ConfidentKids #wellbeing #wellbeingjourney #mentalhealthmatters #MentalHealth #positivepsychology #adventureforwellbeing #OutdoorConfidence #EmpowerYoungMinds #TEDxYouthAdventures

It’s taken me a bit longer than most to return to this platform, as Christmas took it’s toll more than usual this year. That said, this weekend brought a much-needed boost as I was invited as a special guest at the Bristol and Channel Islands ACF Dinner Night during their Adult Development Weekend at the stunning Cadet Training Centre Frimley Park. As well as all the fabulous adult volunteers I got to chat and spend time with, I was delighted to share the evening alongside the gorgeous Lord Lieutenant of Bristol, Peaches Golding OBE CStJ, an absolute powerhouse of a woman, yet so kind and humble at the same time. Who’d of thought an orange and peaches would find themselves sitting alongside each other? - the perfect ‘pearing’ for a fruitful evening! 🤣🍑🍊🍐🤦♀️ As a National Ambassador for this brilliant youth organisation, it was an honour to present some awards and speak about my role promoting the great opportunities available and the overall ‘Cadet Experience’. However, I felt it especially important to highlight that it also involves promoting the fact the organisation simply could not exist without it’s brilliant Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. When speaking to businesses and employers, I always take the opportunity to mention the commitment and dedication of adult volunteers and how the leadership and organisational skills developed in the Army Cadets UK | Official are an asset not only to the young cadets, but also to their day jobs and family. On asking the audience how many had served themselves, I was impressed to see almost half the room raise their hands at being a military veteran. Like myself, many shared how volunteering has positively influenced their mental health, a powerful reminder of the impact of connection and giving back. Congratulations to everyone who received their Kings Coronation medal and awards. A huge thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome and sharing your stories, but particularly Commandant Col Jon Beake and Deputy Commandant, Lt Col Dawn Anstey for the brilliant organisation of a fabulous weekend. Have you ever thought of volunteering with the Army Cadet Force to enhance yourself and the lives of others? No previous military experience required. 📸Nathan Gregory 🙏 Alistair Carns Gary McDade Ashley Fulford #MentalHealth #CadetForces #Volunteering #Veterans #MakingADifference

Exactly what James Senior says here - cadets are the single most important factor in social value and social mobility - returning four-fold to society on any investment the government makes in supporting these incredible forces for good. If you want our younger generation to have better mental health, do better in education, and become happy, well rounded employable people who contribute hugely to society - then invest in cadet forces. It is scientifically proven over and over and over again. Unfortunately those youngsters who most need these life-changing experiences , are often the ones who don’t take up the opportunities. So I urge all parents and teachers to take note - Our young people deserve and need cadet force experiences if we want them to have the best start in life. To support young people we need adult volunteers too (no military experience is necessary - this is simply a uniformed youth organisation like any other) - except it is part funded (so it costs next to nothing for parents!) by MOD and charities like The Ulysses Trust .
