MPhil in Criminological Research, University of Cambridge | JN TATA Scholar

A bit delayed, but I’m thrilled to share that I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MPhil in Criminological Research! I’m deeply grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Arushi Garg, for her invaluable guidance and support throughout the year, and to the incredibly kind and insightful Dr. Loraine Gelsthorpe for her help and reassurance when I needed it the most. I also feel immensely fortunate to have found the most wonderful friends in Hannah Pankow, Mariana Mora, Declan Sullivan, and Natalia Cabrera-Morales, whose companionship made my time at Cambridge truly special. Exploring a new discipline, with its unique logic and traditions, was challenging—but deeply rewarding. This year allowed me to learn about both quantitative and qualitative research methods, equipping me with a unique skill set as a lawyer—one I hope to use to advocate for evidence-based reforms within India’s carceral system. I used my time at Cambridge to work on one such issue; my thesis, which received a distinction, focused on parole decision-making in Delhi. To the best of my knowledge, my thesis is the first empirical study on this topic, and I am looking forward to publishing my findings in the coming year, with the hope that they pique interest and spark much-needed conversations about this often-neglected scheme.

  • At Uni-bridge, we’re incredibly proud to see such glowing reviews coming in for our mentors. It’s truly inspiring to see their hard work and dedication being recognised in such meaningful ways. One mentor who continues to stand out is Kanupriya Sharma. As one of our most sought-after mentors, Kanupriya has guided over 30 individuals through their Masters/PhD applications so far, achieving an extraordinary 90 per cent acceptance rate. Her commitment to her mentees and their success is nothing short of remarkable. Kanupriya is a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge, supported by the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Her research explores the deeply complex and humanising stories of women’s incarceration in India, examining how concepts like morality, shame, and honour shape their pathways to and experiences of imprisonment. It is transformative work that has earned her widespread recognition both within and beyond academia. What sets Kanupriya apart is her passion for driving change. She is the founder of the Cambridge Decolonising Criminology Network, an initiative challenging dominant euro-centric narratives in criminology and promoting diverse perspectives from the Global South. Her contributions have been celebrated with honours such as the Vice Chancellor’s Social Impact Award, 2022, Cambridge SU ‘Equality & Liberation’ Award Shortlist- 2023, and the Most Promising Research Award at the Groves Conference, 2022. We are honoured to have mentors like Kanupriya as part of the Unibridge community. She is not just a mentor but a role model, inspiring others to dream big and achieve even more. If you are looking for guidance on your applications abroad or scholarships essays, particularly in the field of social sciences, there is no better person to turn to. Gates-Cambridge Scholar, PhD Candidate in Criminology at University of Cambridge, UK

Woke up to this heartfelt review from one of my mentees, and it truly made my day. I had the privilege of mentoring them for their Gates Scholarship essay. While they didn’t get the scholarship, hearing how much the guidance and experience meant to them is a reminder of why I do what I do. Mentorship is about so much more than outcomes. It’s about helping someone uncover their potential, tell their story authentically, and gain the confidence to pursue their dreams. Reading their words, knowing that I made even a small difference in their journey, is deeply humbling. Moments like these remind me that mentorship is not just work, it’s a privilege. P.S. While they didn’t win the scholarship, they were still accepted into their chosen program at Cambridge—a testament to their hard work, grit and determination! To all my mentees: the wins aren’t always in the form of awards or acceptances, but in the growth, clarity, and courage you gain along the way. I’m so grateful to be part of that process for so many amazing individuals. If you’re looking for guidance and support through your application or scholarship process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me by connecting with me via https://lnkd.in/ew6jgpfw. I’d be honoured to be a part of your journey. 💙

  • Sumati Thusoo, one of our inspiring mentors at Uni-bridge, was recently featured in a Netflix documentary on Honey Singh, where she addressed how misogynistic lyrics in music contribute to the normalisation of rape culture and provide it cultural sanction. As a long-time gender activist, Sumati is now pursuing a PhD at Rutgers School of Management and Labour Relations, focusing on studying working conditions in garment supply chains: a critical area impacting labour rights and gender equality globally. Sumati brings her deep activism experience and academic expertise to guide students passionate about social justice, gender issues, and impactful research. Teaching Assistant - Rutgers SMLR | Researcher - Monk Prayogshala

Shivangi Deshwal and I were recently featured in the Netflix India documentary Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous. Here’s how it all started: Back in April 2022, we wrote an article titled "Exploring the Formation of Jat Masculinity in Contemporary Punjabi Music" for Economic and Political Weekly Engage. The article resonated widely, sparking conversations, podcasts, and interviews. That’s when we received a call from Sikhya Entertainment (the team behind the Oscar-winning The Elephant Whisperers). They were working on a documentary about Punjabi singer Hirdesh Singh—better known as Yo Yo Honey Singh—and asked us to share our perspective. The makers sought our opinions on his music, wherein we said that the misogynistic and aggressive lyrics, as seen in some of his earlier songs, contribute to the normalization of rape culture and provide it with a kind of cultural sanction, which was also the part that was kept in the final cut. This experience reminded us of the importance of expanding these dialogues beyond academic writing and into mainstream platforms. If you’re interested in a deeper dive, the article is available on EPW Engage. Meanwhile, the documentary is streaming now on Netflix.
