Our former resident Lewis Bulled has welcomed our commissioned report recommending support for care experienced and estranged students. The 23-year-old, who is care experienced and lived with us for three years, said having a centralised place for students to find out more about funding would allow applicants to make a more informed university choice. The Social Market Foundation's report, Care and Learning in Higher Education, makes key recommendations to Government and the Higher Education sector to help care experienced and estranged students into and to succeed at university. Lewis, who was supported during his studies by the Unite Foundation, which partnered us on the report, graduated with a first class integrated Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Sheffield. "The support from university to university varies drastically, so any extra support the Government can provide for care experienced and estranged students, to bring all the details together will offer freedom of choice, in terms of being able to go to the right university," he said. We set up the Unite Foundation in 2012 and remain its principal corporate donor and accommodation partner, having donated over £16m towards its work, which has supported more than 800 students. Unite Students reposted this
We’re proud here at Unite Students to have commissioned a new report on care experienced and estranged students. Cross-party think-tank, the Social Market Foundation (SMF)'s report makes nine key recommendations to Government and the Higher Education sector, to support these students into and during university. My youngest daughter is in her first year at university and has our family support, both financially and in other areas of her life, but that is not the case for a significant number of students. Care experienced and estranged students often do not have any family backing and have to do the hard part on their own. This is why we’ve signed the Care Leaver Covenant, a voluntary pledge to provide support and opportunities for young people across finance, health, education, employment and independent living. We also continue to support the great work that the Unite Foundation is doing. 🚨 OUT TODAY: 'Invest in higher education for care experienced and estranged students' Currently, flat funding support across universities means those better at taking on more care experienced and estranged students are forced to spread their resources more thinly. Although poor attainment at 16 is a significant barrier to the reaching HE, care experienced and estranged students face specific challenges if they make it, including: 👉 issues securing affordable housing 👉 financial insecurity 👉 switching from local authority care to uni support SMF analysis found that in the current system, support is inconsistent between universities. Essentially, care experienced and estranged students that do make it to HE often have to choose their uni based on the financial support offered, limiting their chances of success. Our recommendations include: 🟢 Universities should receive a guaranteed minimum of £1,000 per estranged or care experienced student per academic year. 🟢 Standardise and extend statutory support from local authorities for students up to graduation, provided they enrol before the age of 25. 🟢 All Higher Education providers should be signatories to the Care Leaver Covenant to solidify their sense of responsibility for care experienced and estranged students 🟢 Student Finance England should offer non-repayable grants, equivalent to an average parental contribution, for care-experienced and estranged students Read the full report, commissioned by Unite Students and Unite Foundation, at: https://lnkd.in/eDhY-VqJ

See how our Durham project has progressed over the past 12 months! Our Rushford Court property is undergoing an extension with a two-storey hub for amenities being built in front of it. This will set Rushford Court up to potentially be Durham University’s 18th college. The property has 358 bedrooms and the build is set to finish later this year. The hub, called the Heart building, will include a reception, study and social spaces: https://lnkd.in/etAAsJ9s The work is part of a 40-year agreement, further strengthening our relationship with Durham University. #studentaccommodation #construction #universitypartnership #PBSA
