Amazing work from our University of Glasgow School of Law team who recently won first place in the 'Observatory on Human Rights of Children Policy Advocacy Competition 2024':
Penultimate year LLB hons. (common law) student at UofG| Exchange student at SUNY, Buffalo| GU principal’s award for civic engagement nominee| VP of competitions @ELSA Glasgow
Delighted to share that our team comprising Julia Budzynska, Mustafa Mamujee,Abi Lennon and myself, representing University of Glasgow School of Law , won 1st place in the Observatory on Human Rights of Children Policy Advocacy Competition 2024, hosted by Swansea University and supported by UNICEF UK The competition focused on advancing children’s rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It provided a platform to research a critical policy issue, prepare a policy brief for a (fictional) Government Minister, and advocate for meaningful change. Our policy brief explored the adverse effects of corporal punishments and presented actionable recommendations to progress children’s rights. In the final round, we presented our brief and engaged in a Q&A session with the judges, which led us to secure the top spot. A heartfelt thank you to Nicole Marshall (Fanning) for this incredible opportunity and to Bruce Adamson for his invaluable guidance. It was an honor to be part of such an impactful initiative and contribute to advocating for children’s rights.

📢 New Working Paper Alert📢 We’re excited to share the latest in our 2024 working paper series: “A Renewed Vision of Market Definition’s Importance: Competition Law in the Collective Interest” by Magali Eben, Senior Lecturer in Competition Law and Deputy Director of CREATe. In this paper, she challenges the traditional view of market definition as a mere technicality, arguing that it plays a critical role in maintaining the legitimacy of competition law by anchoring it to the collective interest. My journey as a human rights lawyer was profoundly influenced by student pro bono work, particularly at Castlemilk Law Centre. This #ProBonoWeek, I’ve written an article reflecting on how those experiences helped shape my professional identity and instilled a belief that law can be a tool for progressive social change—and that lawyers can, and perhaps should, work to make a difference in the lives of those facing injustice. I'm proud to have now returned to the University of Glasgow School of Law to help develop new pro bono opportunities for students through the Glasgow Open Justice Centre and our newly established Student Pro Bono Committee. #WeDoProBono LawWorks Pro Bono Week UK

Every year, our LLM students have the opportunity to develop their Master dissertations in collaboration with non-academic organisations across the private, public and non-for-profit sectors. These "Collaborative LLM dissertations" present important benefits for partner organisations and participating students. Partner organisations will receive high quality research relevant to their organisational needs at no cost. Participating students will get the opportunity to conduct research with practical impact and to build networks relevant to their future employment. We are now inviting expressions of interest from non-academic organisations across the private, public and non-for-profit sectors to collaborate with our LLM students on their LLM dissertations. We were delighted to host the inaugural Madge Easton Anderson Lecture last night, which was delivered by Professor Linda Mulcahy, Statutory Professor of Socio-Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford and Director of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. Professor Mulcahy spoke to her paper ‘The Right to Legal Knowledge: Epistemic injustice in a post democratic age.’ This lecture series is designed to commemorate the first woman lawyer in the UK through reflecting on contemporary feminist legal work.
