“Everyone is welcome here” – meet Plymouth’s student president with inclusion at his heart. Having finished school in his native Nigeria, Dindu Okechukwu was contemplating what to do next; and a love of helping others and a keenness to study by the sea drew him to a Psychology degree at the University of Plymouth. On Saturday 17th August, University of Plymouth student Grace John headed to Worcester, Sixway Stadium to represent GB Women in an American Football game against Finland in the 2023/24 IFAF European Championship Silver Medal game! 👏🏽 Grace joined Blitz (American Football student group) in 22/23 season having no experience of the sport. Since joining the club, Grace now plays for the GB Women, The Birmingham Lions Women (Bafa NWFL Premiership), Bristol Aztecs (Bafa Premiership), and the GB Women's! Grace was also part of the championship winning team (The Birmingham Lions Women) this summer, that was played in Coventry. "I am honoured to have been a part of such an amazing group of women!! Megan Williams, who studied BSc (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice and has now started her MSc Criminology degree here at the University of Plymouth shares with us her journey through university, including navigating those first few months living in a new city with new people to discovering the SU community and making friends for life! 😍 "Your course is obviously the biggest part of your University experience, but at the same time, getting involved in other events and knowing that there is support out there as well is so important. Siddham Mehta, who joined the University of Plymouth to study MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Occupational Therapy in 2023, shares how his experience as an international student has been shaped by his involvement with the Students’ Union. The power of joining a sports club: "The SU has changed my life forever." James Stansbury, Law student and member of the Lacrosse Club, shares his story on how joining a sports club not only enhanced his university experience but also provided him with opportunities for self-growth and prepared him for his future after graduating. "Without the SU, I probably would have dropped out in the first year. The reason I went and did my work the way I did it, was because I wanted to come back, and I wanted to keep playing. Let’s reflect on the significance of #BlackHistoryMonth2024 🖤🤎 In the UK, this campaign takes place every October to celebrate Black contributions to society and culture. This year’s theme: “Reclaiming Narratives” focused on correcting historical inaccuracies, in order to highlight the complexity and untold achievements of Black heritage. We asked two influential figures from the Black community in Plymouth to share their experiences: Joanitha Ntangeki, PhD, UPIC Tutor & International Commercial Law Expert: "In honouring Black history, we embrace a legacy of courage, resilience, and knowledge—a foundation that empowers us to rise and inspire. As an educator, I am proud to foster a classroom where diversity enriches learning, and where knowledge becomes a tool of liberation and change for every student." Dindu Okechukwu, President of University of Plymouth Students' Union: “Black History Month resonates deeply within me as more than just a celebration – it's a powerful reminder of our resilience, creativity, and unwavering spirit. Through vibrant events like Black Heritage Day and the REACH-UP mentoring event here at the Students' Union, I've witnessed first-hand how our history ignites a fire of inspiration in both students and staff alike. Each Inspirational Figure’s submission tells a story of triumph, innovation, and determination, reflecting the extraordinary contributions of Black individuals who walk our university grounds today.
