About us
Research in the School of Biosciences is focused primarily on essential biological processes at the molecular and cellular level, encompassing the disciplines of biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology and biomedical research. The School’s research has three main themes (Protein Science, Molecular Microbiology and Biomolecular Medicine) each led by a senior Professor and underpinned by excellent research facilities. The School has a strong commitment to transnational research, impact and industrial application with a substantial portfolio of enterprise activity and expertise. In REF2014, 88% of the School's submitted outputs were in the "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" category, placing it in the top 10 across the UK. The 2018 Times Good University Guide ranks the School of Biosciences 25th in the UK and the Guardian University Guide ranks us 24th out of 101 Universities. In the National Student Survey we consistently appear in the top 10 for Overall Student Satisfaction. For example, in 2017, our Biochemistry degree was ranked 8th in the in the UK with 97% of our final year students being very satisfied with their course.
