“We urge leaders to treat femicide with the urgency it demands. Violence against women is preventable, but only if we act decisively. Strengthening justice systems, supporting survivors, and dismantling the power imbalances and harmful norms that perpetuate this crisis. Women’s lives depend on it.” Tabitha Morton, Executive Director, UN Women UK Join the #16Days of Activism campaign: https://lnkd.in/eQNfE58n

About us
Cover Photo: UN Women/Mariam Alimi We are UN Women, the only global agency dedicated to gender equality. Created in 2010, UN Women is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. Gender inequality affects all women and girls in all countries across the world. UN Women UK is focussed on changing the way the world works for women from a UK perspective, setting the strategic direction for the UK, and delivering policies, programmes and campaigns, in the local UK context. We partner with our strong government, business and civil society network to reduce gender discrimination and improve the lives of women and girls across the country.

What happens when something is deemed a “national emergency”? We ask 100% of the population to act, not 50%. Violence against women is no different. It impacts all of us, regardless of our gender. Which means we all have the power to stop it. When you see a woman uncomfortable in a public space, do something. This #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, make it your mission to #StopSupportReport and start the movement towards a violence-free future. Join now: https://lnkd.in/eQNfE58n

Where do you feel most safe? We know that for men, most homicides happen outside of the home. But for women, home is actually the most dangerous place. A new UN Women report has found that 60% of homicides of women are committed by an intimate partner or other family member. “Every 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman or girl is killed by someone she should have been able to trust—a partner or family member. This is not just a statistic; it is a global emergency rooted in inequality and systemic failure.” Tabitha Morton, Executive Director, UN Women UK “We at UN Women UK urge leaders to treat femicide with the urgency it demands. Violence against women is preventable, but only if we act decisively. Strengthening justice systems, supporting survivors, and dismantling the power imbalances and harmful norms that perpetuate this crisis. Women’s lives depend on it.” This #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we’re asking you to join us and stand against violence. Join the movement today: https://lnkd.in/eQNfE58n

Today marks day one of #16Days of activism against gender-based violence. It’s also a day to remember the Mirabal sisters, who were brutally assassinated 54 years ago. UN Women’s new report has revealed that 60% of homicides of women are committed by an intimate partner or other family member. 140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, which means one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes.
