Empowering students and professionals in STEM to achieve excellence beyond the limitations of racial and social inequity

About us

Welcome to Vanta STEM. Our mission is to empower individuals to achieve excellence in STEM, beyond the limitations of racial and social inequity. Vanta STEM is run by Clive and Ali. We are long term friends, colleagues, mentors and business owners with over 20 years combined experience in industry within the Chemical Sciences. In that time, we have often been the only Black person in our teams/departments... sometimes even in the entire company! Yet, we have successfully navigated the landscape of being a minority in the STEM corporate environment. As thought leaders in our field, we seek to be a hub for the underrepresented; connecting you to our network whilst simultaneously providing the tools and skills to accelerate your career in STEM. It's true that a STEM career can take you far 🤣 I spend most of my time away onboard vessels 🚢 overseeing cargo/bunker operations and collecting representative samples🛢 or at laboratories 🧪 witnessing testing on behalf of my clients 👨🏾🔬 But you've got to take a moment every now and again to appreciate the blessings afforded by such a career. A STEM career has given me the opportunity to see the world, meet people from all different cultures, and to connect with the global STEM workforce 👥️ This is what empowers my mission for diversity and inclusion! Follow us on Vanta STEM and stay up to date with our projects, LOTS to come in 2025 🙌🏾

Q: Where has your career taken you that you never expected? A: We've come a long way from lab coats and test tubes! 🧪🏖️ ⛷️ ⭐ We'd love to hear your answers in the comments! ⭐ Embarking on a career in science can feel a lot like riding a camel—those “ups and downs” may be bumpy, but the journey is incredibly rewarding! Our co-founder Ali knows this firsthand, as he recently found himself atop a camel at the foot of the Great Pyramids during a work trip. From lab breakthroughs to global adventures, a STEM career has the power to carry you to extraordinary places (both literally and figuratively). At Vanta STEM, our focus is on shining a light on the difficulties that many face in this journey, and we're proud to have been supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry to bring a diverse range of views of those who have inspired us together in a podcast to support those who are currently, or are looking to, embark on this journey. #VANTAStem #CareerInScience #STEMinism

  • As Stephen Hendry highlights, conversations amongst working professionals around equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) still face hurdles: ⭐ Exclusion: Underrepresented voices are often left out of critical conversations. ⭐ Disillusion: Fatigue is setting in for many, as they’re repeatedly asked to explain their identities. ⭐ Delusion: Despite progress, key areas like race and disability remain under-addressed. ⭐ Illusion: Polarising narratives in the media and political sphere are turning essential progress into contentious debates. These challenges remind us why our mission at Vanta STEM is vital. We’re working to level the playing field and empower young people to break into the sciences, not despite their identity, but because their perspectives matter. Let’s continue to spark meaningful conversations and inspire real change. 💡

🌍 Breaking Barriers: Addressing Socioeconomic Inequalities in the Chemical Sciences "We know that social and economic inequalities are limiting the aspirations and career choices of some young people and widening the education gap," But here’s the question: Why are so many working professionals avoiding conversations about it? 🤔 ⭐ Exclusion: Underrepresented employees are still more likely to feel excluded from ED&I conversations than others. ⭐ Disillusion: Many are growing frustrated with ED&I discussions, tired of repeatedly talking about their identities with colleagues. ⭐ Delusion: While we’re growing more confident in discussing ED&I professionally, key areas—like disability, gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation—aren’t getting the attention they deserve. ⭐ Illusion: Politics and some media outlets are undermining ED&I efforts, dismissing them as "woke" to provoke reactions and hinder progress. 🎙️Inspired Minds at the Windsor Fellowship’s Destination STEMM - Chemical Sciences Kick-Off! 🚀 What an incredible start to the 4th cohort of the Windsor Fellowship & Royal Society of Chemistry Destination STEMM - Chemical Sciences programme! I was truly honoured to deliver the "GPS Interactive Keynote Speech" at the virtual welcome meeting for our amazing mentees, mentors, and parents/guardians. We explored the power of a Growth Mindset & Neuroplasticity, navigated the twists and turns of My Career Adventure, and charted a course for Meaningful Mentoring. We also discussed the importance of Nurturing your Network and how to Master Your Mindset for success in STEM. Huge thanks to Annette Doherty and Kevin Coutinho for hosting this inspiring event, and to Nayana Gorasia and Philip Gardiner for sharing their invaluable mentoring experiences. As well as Laura M. Reyes and Rukiya Khan for coordinating everything behind the scenes and to the fantastic audience – your active participation and insightful questions made this session truly special! I'm so excited to embark on this mentoring journey with you all and witness the incredible growth and achievements that lie ahead. #WindsorFellowship #RoyalSocietyofChemistry #STEMeducation #InspiringTheNextGeneration #MakingADifference #STEMM #mentorship #diversityandinclusion
