🌱 Vegan or Plant-Based? For consumers, clarity is everything. In a market filled with buzzwords, clear labelling can make a big difference. The terms “vegan” and “plant-based” are often used interchangeably, but they carry very different meanings. Did you know? 🌱 74% of shoppers prefer products to be labelled “Vegan” over “Plant-Based” (Big Vegan Survey 2024). *(1) 🌱 Google searches for “Vegan” have been almost 14 times higher than searches for “Plant-Based” over the last 5 years. *(2) 🌱 On social media, #Vegan outperforms #PlantBased, with more followers and searches on Instagram and TikTok. So why does this matter? Using the term “Vegan” gives your product the clarity consumers need. It reassures shoppers that no animals were used at any stage of production, not only as part of the ingredients, but as part of testing as well. On the other hand, definitions for “Plant-Based” vary, and some products labelled “Plant-Based” can contain animal-derived ingredients, causing confusion and breaking trust. 🔗 Learn more about why your brand should #SayVegan - read the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/d9a_ZSWv #VeganTrademark #VeganCertification *(1) https://lnkd.in/dazK9k3D *(2) https://lnkd.in/dWVhe5VU

Smurfit Westrock Markham Vale has renewed its Vegan Trademark certification, reaffirming its commitment to providing fully vegan packaging solutions. As the first packaging company in the world to achieve this certification, they continue to set the standard for transparency and sustainability in the industry. But what does it really mean for packaging to be vegan? And why does third-party certification matter? We spoke To Grace Stenson at Smurfit WestRock to learn more: 🔍 What would not be vegan about cardboard packaging? "Many people may assume that all corrugated packaging is recyclable and vegan; however, we did not want to rely on assumptions. Instead, we took the proactive step of implementing rigorous checks to verify that our packaging meets vegan standards. As a result, we became the first packaging company in the world to achieve this certification. We take great pride in having established these thorough checks, which not only reinforce our commitment to sustainability but also provide our customers with the confidence to promote their packaging as vegan, alongside their products." 💬 We’re encouraging businesses to proudly #SayVegan when talking about their products, do you think there’s any stigma or misunderstanding with the word ‘vegan’? "While the vegan movement has gained significant momentum in recent years, there still exists a degree of stigma surrounding vegan products and certifications. This can stem from misconceptions or a lack of understanding about what vegan standards truly represent. However, we recognise the importance of challenging these perceptions and providing clarity to our customers." 🌍 How does your strong #sustainability commitment translate into action? "Smurfit WestRock’s 'circular by nature' approach means that we control every stage of the process—from managing our own forests and growing our own trees to operating our own recycling plants. This comprehensive system allows us to seamlessly close the loop, ensuring that materials are continuously recycled and returned to our paper mills to start the process anew." A huge congratulations to Smurfit WestRock Markham Vale on this achievement! 🎉 #SayVegan #VeganTrademark #SmurfitWestRock #SustainablePackaging #VeganPackaging #CircularEconomy #EthicalBusiness

The #VeganTrademark team had a great time earlier this week at Sustainable Foods at the Business Design Centre in London. We loved connecting with professionals from the food industry, talking about the latest trends, engaging in many inspiring conversations on vegan food and sustainable practices and discussing the value of trusted third-party vegan labelling. We hope you enjoyed the vegan chocolate that Caroboo were so kind to send samples of for us to share with everyone! 📧 Interested in learning more about Vegan Trademark certification? 🌱 Are ‘vegan’ and ‘plant-based’ the same? What’s the difference between ‘cruelty-free’ and ‘vegan’ labels? 🐇 These terms are often used by brands, and it’s essential that businesses understand the differences in their meaning, as well as in consumer perception. What do the more commonly used terms in the market mean? Read the full article for a full understanding: https://lnkd.in/ey857FG7 🏷️ #Vegan The term ‘vegan’ is a clear descriptor that a product has been made without the use of animals at any stage of production. For businesses looking to stand out, clear labelling isn’t just good practice—it’s a strategic advantage. 🏷️ #PlantBased It’s a term often used interchangeably with ‘vegan’, however, there isn’t a clear definition of what it means, and its ambiguous nature creates confusion for shoppers looking for vegan products. E.g. The British Standards Institution (BSI) defines plant-based foods as those primarily made from plants but allows up to 5% animal-derived ingredients such as milk or eggs. 🏷️ #CrueltyFree Originally and mostly used for cosmetics, but increasingly being used by other industries. Meaning that the product has not been tested on animals, it still doesn’t necessarily mean that it exclude animal products from the ingredients list. As consumers demand clarity and confidence when they shop, misleading labels and ambiguous claims won’t cut it. Find out more about why vegan labelling is a business essential in 2025 here: https://lnkd.in/ey857FG7 Does your brand have a vegan product?
