  • Your VoiceAbility 2024 #WrapUp. Here’s how together we made a difference this year. We supported people to have their voices heard, brought voice and rights issues out from behind closed doors, and many of you shared your experience of advocacy. And so much more. None of that would have been possible without all of you who support our clients, share your stories, and volunteer 💜 Together, let’s keeping fighting to make everyone's voice heard in 2025.

  • Our phone lines and web chat are open today (Monday 23 December) from 9am-5pm — but will be closed on Wednesday 25 December, Thursday 26 December, and Wednesday 1 January. Advice is available on our website 24/7 if you need support outside of these times. Take a look at our 'get support' pages for more information: https://lnkd.in/eenQETJn

  • Our Bradford team are "incredibly happy" to be continuing to support Bradford people to be heard in decisions about their health, care and wellbeing under a new contract – which includes a community project for seldom heard groups. Since 2018, we've worked with Bradford Council and the NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board to provide a wide range of advocacy services for adults in the area, opening more than 8,000 cases. Our Bradford team also runs a community project, aimed at supporting people in 3 different communities across the city – South Asian women and domestic abuse, Eastern European and European, and LGBTQ+ – who may not be aware of or feel able to access the advocacy support available. • White text on a purple background: "The new contract with VoiceAbility continues to be a much-needed service across the district, for people to be able to interact and influence everyday decisions from health, social care or mental health. I'm also really pleased to hear that VoiceAbility will be reaching out to seldom heard community groups who are often not able to voice their opinions, and we look forward to the difference this will make for those individuals." Lucy, Jon, Anne and Jeremy were invited to Westminster last week to speak to MPs about their experiences of disability, the challenges faced when receiving care from the NHS, and what needs to change. Following the round table event with the Health and Social Care Select Committee, they shared some of these experiences with us. Lucy: "I think the government needs to listen to people with lived experience of the system, and their voices need to be heard as equal stakeholders in these services to make sure they are suitable and help people." Jon: "People need to be listened to more, and there’s not 1 tick box for everybody. Just because you met 1 person with autism, it doesn’t mean you treat us all the same." Anne: "If it wasn’t for my Speak Out work, I wouldn’t know how to have my say. It’s easier to get to people from different services, and have our voices heard and get support. But it’s still hard for people who don’t know about these things to get support." Jeremy: "It’s no good it just being a tick box exercise. The person’s voice, the family’s voice, the carer’s voice has got to carry equal weight as the professionals." We made the final! 🥳 A poster about how our work addresses health inequalities in Scotland was shortlisted for Voluntary Health Scotland's annual competition. Edinburgh-based advocate Yasmin Ali, who led on the design, was invited to the organisation’s annual conference where the winner was decided, and was joined by Alex Adair — Team Leader for Edinburgh, the Lothians, and the Scottish Borders — and Julia White, VoiceAbility’s Public Affairs Lead for Scotland. Yasmin said: “To be shortlisted as a finalist on our first time entering the competition was a welcome surprise and a great privilege.” Learn more about the poster competition, our work in Scotland, and the conference: https://lnkd.in/eVkE-ZPK #HealthInequalities #VoluntaryHealthScotland
