Following a successful 15 years of leadership, Steve Cocliff is retiring as managing director of VolkerRail.   Steve’s journey has been one of transformation and progress. He has created a legacy of success, and his commitment to safety, innovation, and excellence has set a new standard across the industry.   We have no doubt that Stuart Birch will continue to build on your legacy and foster new approaches to enhance our already strong reputation in the market, as he succeeds Steve in his role in January.   From everyone across VolkerRail, we wish Steve all the very best in his retirement and welcome Stuart into his new role.   RSSB, Railway Industry Association, The PWI #seniorappointment #rail #reputation

  • VolkerWessels UK has been ranked 9th in the National Centre for Diversity’s ‘Top 100 Most Inclusive Workplaces Index 2024’ and has been awarded the ‘Engineering Company of the Year’ for the fifth consecutive year. Alongside this, we are proud to have retained their top 10 status in the National Centre for Diversity ‘Top 100 Most Inclusive Employers Index’ for 2024, finishing in 9th place, and were also awarded Engineering Company of the Year for the fifth consecutive year. The Index celebrates employers across various sectors, including construction, further education, charities, and public service that have shown outstanding commitment to Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement (FREDIE). The rankings are based on employee feedback from organisations that work towards the NCFD’s Investors in Diversity standard.  Emma Ward, Head of Sustainability and Inclusion, reflects on the award - “During 2024 we have built on our RESPECT programme which focusses on respecting our colleagues, even if they are different to you. This included a year-long Faith campaign which raised awareness of the most common faiths held by employees and we enjoyed sharing the different cultures, customs, traditions and celebrations online and during in person events.  We also supported our female employees by hosting our first Women in Construction Networking event alongside continuing our female reverse mentoring programme, launching the second cohort of the EMPOWER female career development programme, and refreshing our PPE offering for women.  Our 140 strong FIR Champions have been exceptional this year, and the introduction of Lead Champions in each of our businesses has meant more activities and awareness events have been held than ever before.” Solat Chaudhry, Chief Executive at the National Centre for Diversity said:     “I send my warmest congratulations to VolkerWessels UK on successfully reaching number 9 in the Top 100 Most Inclusive UK Employers Index 2024. The inspiring organisations that make the Top 100, demonstrate excellent levels of employee retention and recruitment and clearly demonstrate how they value and respect the people that work for them.  What better than to be recognised by peers and those travelling in the same direction towards the common goal of Fairness in the workplace. It is hugely motivational.” Read more about our FIR strategy here > https://bit.ly/3ZItoP6

  • Celebrating Gold Membership in The 5% Club We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded Gold accredited membership as part of The 5% Club’s esteemed 2024-25 Employer Audit Scheme. This achievement highlights our commitment to empowering our employees through “earn & learn” initiatives such as Apprenticeships, Graduate programmes, and Work Placements. Hear from Jayne Youell, Apprenticeship Lead, who attended the annual event: “On Monday 18th November, Marcus and I attended the 5% Club Annual Employer Audit Symposium at the BT Tower in London. Members of The 5% Club aspire to achieve 5% of their workforce in earn and learn positions (including apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formalised training schemes). This is the first year VolkerWessels UK has taken part in the audit although we have committed to the 5% Club ethos for several years. 229 employers took part in this year’s audit. We had to report on the breadth of our apprenticeship offer, inclusion and social mobility, quality and future growth. Our commitment to developing our staff through programmes such as apprenticeships and graduates has been acknowledged by the achievement of Gold Membership of the 5% Club. It was a proud moment to see our name under the banner of Gold Members and have the success of our professional development programmes recognised.”

We are pleased to announce that 90% of our company car fleet is now either fully electric or hybrid. This impressive, industry-leading position demonstrates our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon emissions and to be Net Zero by 2050. Spencer Ward, Head of Fleet, explains how this notable milestone has been achieved. “90% of our company car drivers have successfully transitioned away from diesel and petrol since we introduced the choice of alternatively fuelled vehicles in 2020. This represents over 1200 vehicles, 825 of which are fully electric, which is having a significant impact on the carbon emissions associated with business mileage and is something we are very proud to achieve. This has been facilitated through our partnership with Lex Autolease, who have been instrumental in bringing alternatively fuelled vehicles into every company car grade and supporting employees to choose a vehicle suited to their needs. This includes getting an understanding of an employee’s anticipated mileage, their ability to access to charging infrastructure, and ensuring the employee knows the tax implications associated with different vehicle choices. To support the transition, we have also installed charge points at our regional offices and project locations, meaning it is easy for our employees and visitors to charge.” Reducing emissions associated with business mileage is one of many ways that supports our target to be Net Zero by 2050. • VolkerWessels UK Resourcing Team at Forces Transition Group Live Transition Day The Resourcing Team recently participated in the quarterly Forces Transition Group (FTG) Live Transition Day at Wetherby Racecourse. Our representatives, including Duncan Lowe, Darren Law, and Mitch Mitchelmore, joined numerous other organisations and 150 service personnel for this fantastic event. Both Darren and Mitch, ex-service leavers themselves, brought invaluable insights and firsthand experience, further enriching our ability to connect with and support those looking to transition into civilian roles. Meeting so many highly skilled, committed, and driven individuals was a pleasure. We want to continue our support to FTG as we recognise the strong talent pool of resilient, committed, quality driven, individuals that are, and will be, the future of civil engineering in the UK, as they offer a myriad of highly transferable skills transitioning into civilian life and the civil engineering industry.
