On Wednesday I will be at the national Restraint Reduction Network conference – Driving Change Towards a Culture of Care - in Newcastle, where I will be introducing a rehearsed reading of excerpts from my new play, You Need to Calm Down. The play tells the story of Becki, a young autistic woman. Five years after a breakdown, Becki is on the run. She needs help. Help to escape, to recover, to put herself back together. Can her best friend, Rachel, give her the kindness and compassion she so desperately needs? Or will she put Becki back into the system that is destroying her? While Becki’s story is a fictional one, it is informed by the real experiences of too many neurodivergent people who are badly let down by our health and care system – a system which we all own. Which is why I’m very glad to share it at the conference. I hope it helps to get a vital message across to policy makers and commissioners – this level of ‘care’ is simply not good enough.
