A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the VONNE Conference and AGM! A special thank you to North East Mayor Kim McGuinness for opening the conference with the announcement of the new Opportunity Fund which is now open for *applications. The event was a platform for crucial discussions on topics that matter deeply to our communities and sector: fostering cohesion, understanding the root causes of the riots, untangling hate from politics, and addressing pressing issues like poverty, life chances, and the lack of opportunity. Conversations were thought-provoking and inspiring, and we're excited to keep the momentum going. Stay tuned for delegate packs and the latest updates in VONNE News! *Applications close Friday 17 January 2025 #VONNE2024

On Wednesday I will be at the national Restraint Reduction Network conference – Driving Change Towards a Culture of Care - in Newcastle, where I will be introducing a rehearsed reading of excerpts from my new play, You Need to Calm Down. The play tells the story of Becki, a young autistic woman. Five years after a breakdown, Becki is on the run. She needs help. Help to escape, to recover, to put herself back together. Can her best friend, Rachel, give her the kindness and compassion she so desperately needs? Or will she put Becki back into the system that is destroying her? While Becki’s story is a fictional one, it is informed by the real experiences of too many neurodivergent people who are badly let down by our health and care system – a system which we all own. Which is why I’m very glad to share it at the conference. I hope it helps to get a vital message across to policy makers and commissioners – this level of ‘care’ is simply not good enough. We must do better. https://lnkd.in/evwCGT74 #DisabilityEquality #Neurodiversity #HealthEquity

This week is Safeguarding Adults Week, a week of reflection on the importance of safeguarding, and how we can all contribute to safeguarding adults within our organisations and communities. The Ann Craft Trust will be hosting events throughout the week and you can access seminars, resources and more on their website at: https://lnkd.in/ef7XNtNp #SafeguardingAdultsWeek2024
This week is Safeguarding Adults Week. Each day this week we will be focusing on a different theme. Today we're exploring the role that professional curiosity can play in safeguarding. Effective safeguarding starts with a conversation. This means taking interest in a person, while at the same time observing, listening, and asking questions to ensure we get the fullest possible picture of the situation. This helps us to test or challenge our working assumptions. Professional curiosity means looking beyond the information that is immediately available to us to dig deeper into the grey areas. It means we explore the areas where we might have doubts, to find some clarity. Sometimes, the things that people are not saying or doing can trigger this professional curiosity.
