Imagine it is 2006. You need to buy a phone. You've heard about the upcoming "iPhone", but you decide to opt for the prevailing, tried & tested business leader: a BlackBerry. Now suppose you are stuck with this phone for 30 years. Knowing what we do now, we'd all opt for the iPhone - even a stoic "never owned an Apple product"-man like me. This is a dumb thought experiment, but it actually reflects quite well how most of the world makes long term decisions on where to source its electricity from. Replace the BlackBerry with coal or gas and the iPhone with solar or wind + storage. 30 year power purchase agreements are locking in countries in the developing world into less attractive, costlier thermal power over this period. For a great discussion on this, listen to Sugandha Srivastav on VoxDev Talks: International Growth Centre
Why Pakistan is locked into overpriced and environmentally damaging power sector contracts
