This morning, WA hosted Ruth Cadbury MP, Chair of the Transport Select Committee – to explore her priorities for the Committee, and broader outlook on the sector (including a focus on affordability, reliability and sustainability). Across the board, transport is a means-to-an-end for people across the UK, with increased connectivity unlocking the potential for growth in previously underserved communities. Attendees from a range of sectors and modes explored topics including: 🚌 All about bus: Along with the Government's Better Buses Bill, the Transport committee (as was announced today) is also going to be focusing heavily on buses and demand led transport. Getting public transport right - across both cities and rural areas, is high up on the priority list. 🔌 EV infrastructure focus: As has been shown in the media conversation the past week, EVs are a hot topic in transport at the moment. The discussion centred around infrastructure and ensuring the roll out is inclusive of people without access to driveways across the UK. 🚆 The rail agenda: Ensuring that the high skilled jobs in the rail industry are not lost while the process of nationalisation occurs is key to the long-term stability of the sector. Stability brings about the reliability for passengers that the government are keen to get right. There will also be a heavy focus on the Great British Rail Bill and the Committee's work to scrutinise that piece of legislation - ensuring innovation and consumer choice are protected under nationalisation. 💡 Transport and energy: The intersection between these two areas has been less of a focus in the current discussions around the sector. The connection will be especially interesting when it comes to the locational pricing debate and what that will mean for the future of transport in the UK. 🔗 Integrated transport: Multi-modal transport is a key component of all transport strategies. However, the integration of these modes is what is key and currently what is missing across a lot of the UK. Moving forward, all strategies should be placing an emphasis on integration of transport networks across modes.
