FACT FRIDAY: On one of our recent projects – refurbishment of a Grade II* Queen Anne house, with parts dating back to the mid-1600s – we used an innovative method of engineering that supported a central spine wall whilst we created room for a new basement beneath the original structure. The Pynford beam method, pioneered by Abbey Pynford, provides a robust, reinforced concrete solution ideal for underpinning and structural openings. The process began by carefully removing pockets of brickwork in the existing wall to install temporary support structures, known as ‘stools’ which stabilised the wall during construction. Once the stools were in place, the remaining brickwork between them was removed and reinforcement was fabricated around the stools. These stools, being sacrificial, were cast directly into the Pynford beam. The concrete was poured, allowed to cure, and then dry pack was placed between the top of the beam and the underside of the structure above. Following this, hand-dug shafts approximately 3 meters deep were constructed to form reinforced concrete (r/c) columns that would support the Pynford beam. Bases were cast below the future basement slab to anchor the columns, with reinforcement cages fabricated and concrete placed after formwork erection. Once the concrete achieved its design strength, formwork was removed, completing the structural support system. This process ensured the central spine wall remained stable while excavation of the ground beneath proceeded to create the new basement space, all whilst respecting and preserving the original building. #factfriday #pynfordbeams #modernengineering #traditionalbuild #basement #restoration #refurbishment #gradeII

Sadly, on average two construction workers take their own lives every day. A stark reminder of the volatile and high-pressure industry we work in. In honour of this year’s International Men’s Day theme of ‘Men’s Health Champions’, we recognise that many men still find it difficult to share their worries, hardships, or challenges in the workplace. Whether perceived as a weakness by their colleagues or an inability to carry out their role, these misconceptions must be brought to the forefront. Here at Walter Lilly, we know it’s okay not to be okay. Stress about looming deadlines? Crippled by anxiety before an important meeting? A change in personal circumstances impacting work? It’s normal, and you’re not alone. Whatever the situation, all men feel the pressure occasionally, but how can we help ourselves and each other when times get tough? ✋ Ask for help – talk to a line manager, mental health first aider, or loved ones. 🤝 Check in with colleagues – take the time to notice when someone is acting differently. ☕ Step away from the workplace – “Are you OK, do you want to grab a coffee and catch up?” 🗣️ If unsure, ask twice – a simple way of showing you’re genuinely interested and ready to listen. ☎️ Access support resources – for those who’d prefer to talk anonymously, consider the many charities which provide a 24/7 confidential helpline including Lighthouse Club, Samaritans, and Mind. We spoke to some of our team about the positive male role models that have influenced their lives whilst our campaign to promote positive mental health continues. It was fantastic to see Rhys Sumpton, our Divisional Director of Landmark and Heritage, attend the recent The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Roundtable, where industry experts gathered to discuss what modern professionalism in construction meant to their organisations. Focusing on accountability, inclusivity, and building strong professional values, events like this help to drive positive change across construction. We are thrilled to be part of an industry-wide commitment to a modern, progressive future! #CIOB #construction #modernprofessionalism #culture #leadership

Did you know that October has been Menopause Awareness Month? A transitionary period which typically begins between the ages of 45-55, over 33 million women in the UK currently are or will be affected by the condition, which for some occurs sooner, known as early or premature menopause (before the ages of 45 and 40). Whilst different for everyone, common symptoms include hot flushes, anxiety, fatigue, memory loss, depression, headaches, joint pain, and an altered menstrual cycle amongst several others. Research suggests many still find it difficult to discuss menopause related challenges in the workplace, particularly at management level, with 10% of women ultimately leaving their jobs due to the condition. Here at Walter Lilly, where one-fifth of our workforce are female, initiatives in place to support affected staff and combat the social stigma surrounding the menopause include: ✅ A formal Menopause Policy (including support resources) ✅ Access to the BUPA Menopause Healthline ✅ Temperature control and flexible working adjustments ✅ Compulsory ‘Conversations around Women’s Health’ training modules for all staff Through ongoing dialogue and education we aim to ensure the needs of our female colleagues are never belittled, ignored, or overlooked, allowing them to continue thriving whilst entering into a new phase of life. #menopauseawarenessmonth #menopauseintheworkplace #menopausematters #support #wellbeing #inclusive #breakingthestigma

This week marks Recycle Week ♻️ The national campaign kicked off with a stark reminder that UK households are wasting over nine billion recyclable items each year! It’s a timely call for all to embrace the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — both at work and at home. Walter Lilly are always keen to explore new ways to recycle and repurpose materials across our sites. We’re proud to be partnered with Community Wood Recycling, a fantastic network of social enterprises that collect and reuse waste wood in the most environmentally responsible way—while also creating jobs and training opportunities for disadvantaged individuals. So far, Community Wood Recycling has saved 84.9 tonnes of wood from Walter Lilly projects, which has resulted in: 💼 1 paid job created 🛠️ 1.5 people trained 🏗️ 12.1 tonnes (14%) repurposed for community DIY and building projects 🔥 1.4 tonnes (2%) processed into firewood and kindling for local households ♻️ 71.5 tonnes (84%) recycled into woodchip, used for particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon-neutral fuel for power stations. Their services are an example of the circular economy in action, demonstrating that by saving wood, we’re contributing to a more sustainable society. As they put it, ‘Community reuse is one of the most powerful tools available to fight waste.’ #recycleweek2024 #reduce #reuse #recycle #socialenterprise #makeanimpact
