How might creation of, and engagement with, artworks help patients, scientists and artists to communicate with one another, and develop new insights into fertility? The project New Horizons in Fertility Research has been exploring this question in relation to egg cells and early human embryos. Bespoke artworks created as part of the project are being used to help patients in Edinburgh and Coventry understand aspects of (in)fertility and related research. In this podcast by the Progress Educational Trust, researchers from our Directorate of Biomedical Sciences discuss their involvement in the project and share what they have learnt from it. We are delighted to share the news that Professor Kirstie Haywood will be taking up the post of Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Culture) at Warwick and Academic Director of the National Centre for Research Culture (NCRC) from the New Year. A Professor of Health Outcomes, Kirstie has been an active and engaged member of the University of Warwick for more than 15 years, with leadership experience across research, education, and equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) portfolios. Read more about Kirstie's background at the link below. Kirstie replaces Professor Sotaro Kita, who stepped down from his role as Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Culture) and NCRC Academic Director in November at the end of his three-year term to return to a full-time role as a Professor within the Department of Psychology at Warwick. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kita for his substantial contribution to the establishment and work of the NCRC.

One of the best days I have ever had at work It is clear that the UK construction industry needs to do more to create a better environment for the mental health of the people that work in it. There is clearly some great work in this space now but we must do more and collaborate as an industry to change the dial. The positive news is that we have started something that we think will make that difference, we have a long way to go but are very much underway. I feel privileged and honoured to be involved in work that is being done, to help identify the root cause of triggers for poor mental health in construction, and importantly provide solutions and interventions to combat them. The work we are doing will make the UK construction industry (and hopefully beyond) treat mental health in the same way we treat H&S. We are carrying out research getting direct feedback from people that work in the UK construction industry to highlight the main issues and solutions around mental health in construction. We are also linking in with work that has been in this space all over the world to learn from what others have done. The end result, create a construction industry that fosters better mental health for everyone that works in it. This isn't about politics or egos, it's about producing something tangible that will make an actual difference to people's lives. The work is a genuine collaboration of people that care, which includes the University of Warwick, the amazing Carla Toro and her inspiring support team, the Tier 1 H&S Group (H&S Directors from the majority of the Tier 1 construction companies), Mates in Mind, the Health and Safety Executive, the Construction Leadership Council, the The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the The Crown Estate, Liz Gribbin at the Builders Talk Group and many others. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the start of this amazing work. As part of the day we identified so many stakeholders that we want to engage with and involve in this amazing work, we will be in contact. It is important that we include people from every part of the industry and we will do that. Much more information to follow soon on what we are doing and our initial findings. In an announcement by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), nine groups led by UK universities have been selected to form a national £50m programme, the NIHR Maternity Disparities Consortium. The research carried out across the Consortium will focus on inequalities before, during and after pregnancy, and will also focus on building capacity for further research to help improve services over time. Yesterday we were delighted to host a kick-off meeting with industry partners to discuss the potential root causes of poor mental health in the construction industry. We were joined by David Bucksley (Sir Robert McAlpine), Henrietta Frater (The Crown Estate), Liz Gribbin (Builders' Talk Group), Sam Downie (Mates in Mind), Daisie Barnett MCIPR (Chartered Institute of Building), Stuart Young MCIPR (Department for Business and Trade) and Tracy Williams (Mace). The meeting, which was funded by the University of Warwick Policy Support Fund, saw some very productive discussions take place and it was fantastic to also identify further opportunities for collaboration with Warwick academics from University of Warwick - Warwick Business School (Pietro Micheli, Maria Wishart, Vicki Belt, Stephen Roper) and Chris Warhurst from IER University of Warwick. Thank you to Jennifer Hagan for her insightful presentation, to Carla Toro for organising and to Charlotte Hills, PhD, David Nickson, Sophie Clohessy and Penny Triantafillou for their support during the day. Through academic-industry partnership-led research and engagement we hope to accelerate evidence-based progress to improve and support construction worker wellbeing across the industry. We’ll be sharing the meeting’s outputs and our next steps very soon!
