  • Whatever the size of your business, understanding risk is a crucial skill. During the Business and Entrepreneurship module of the Wastepreneur training programme, participants learn the critical role of risk assessment in running a sustainable business. For Abdu Musiitwa the session highlighted real-life examples and practical strategies to manage uncertainties, "I once lost money when I sold a large batch of PET cheaply without checking the market demand. Now I know how proper risk assessment can save my business from costly mistakes." Abdu learned the importance of identifying and mitigating risks at every stage of business planning. 💡 Insight: Success lies in preparation. Abdu is now ready to face challenges with a proactive approach. #RiskManagement #BusinessPlanning #WastepreneurChallenge #Bunzl

What if the clothes we wear could contribute to reducing global emissions? Textiles are among the most resource-intensive and polluting industries globally – with high carbon. water, and energy footprints. Decarbonizing the sector implies prioritizing renewable energy in manufacturing (spinning, weaving and dyeing of fabrics) and promoting circularity through alternative fibers, designing them for durability, and ensuring textile residues (both post-industrial and post-consumer) are used in applications other than incineration. Secondhand clothing (SHC) markets have also emerged as a key part of the solution. How? The SMEP Programme is supporting research and practical interventions at secondhand clothing markets in developing countries. In 2022 alone, Uganda and Tanzania imported a combined total of 170 million kilograms of secondhand clothing, valued at $168 million. These markets: - Enable reuse, provide affordable clothing options to consumers - Create economic opportunities for traders.  - Save energy, emissions and water - Reveal intricate dynamics around quality, pricing, and waste management - all linked to social mobility within the trade However, challenges remain. SMEP research in Uganda and Tanzania analyzed 244,500 clothing samples taken from 3 large secondhand markets in Uganda (Owino) and Tanzania (Ilala and Karume), revealing that about 95% is resold and about 5% end up as rags or waste. Understanding grading, quality, bale composition and local consumer preferences is key to improving reuse rates and waste management. Join us in #Baku today as these findings inform today’s UNEP-UNCTAD #COP29 side event discussing decarbonization of the global textile value chains: https://bit.ly/4i02xX5 The full summary report for Uganda and Tanzania markets can be found here: https://lnkd.in/en5gp4bb  SMEP is funded by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and implemented in partnership with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). • Whether negotiating contracts, networking or just to boost your own confidence, developing #SoftSkills can unlock your success. In this week’s interpersonal skills training Pavement Pitching Exercise, WasteAid's #Wastepreneur trainees practiced introducing themselves, their work, and their vision for waste management. For Musiitwa Abdu Swamad, this was more than an exercise — it was a moment of transformation. 🗣️ "I used to let others take center stage, thinking my voice wasn’t strong enough. Today, I stood in front of my peers and delivered my first mock pavement pitch!" Previously, Musiitwa hesitated to speak up, letting others lead while he watched from the sidelines. But this session helped him overcome his fears, step into the spotlight, and confidently articulate his ideas. 💡 Courage is about finding the strength to act in spite of your fears. Musiitwa is now ready to share his story and inspire others to see waste as a resource, not a problem. #PublicSpeaking #ConfidenceBuilding #WastepreneurChallenge #Bunzl #WasteAid #FridayInspiration

  • In our #Wastepreneur training, participants discover the importance of #Budgeting. Okia Lawrence reflected on how this module has changed his approach to managing finances: 💬 “This module has introduced me to what a budget is and how I can differentiate between a personal budget and a business budget.” For Okia, budgeting was a new concept, but he’s now using it to align his income and expenses, prioritize needs over wants, and set achievable goals for growth. By understanding his finances better, he’s gaining the clarity needed to scale his waste business while achieving personal milestones. Budgeting is no longer just a concept; it’s a tool for success. #BudgetingBasics #Wastepreneurship #BuildingFutures #Bunzl
