Have you heard our feature on the How Many Geese podcast yet? 🪿 The nature based podcast How Many Geese recently visited Watatunga, and Molly made it her mission to change their minds about deer and antelope being 'boring'. After deep diving into their diversity and unique qualities, we're thrilled to say they’re now 100% converted enthusiasts. They recorded the podcast right here in the reserve, and they were blown away by what we do for conservation and animal welfare. Have you ever wondered what our animals get up to when no one's about? This blackbuck seems to be starting his own hair salon... we think he needs a bit more practice... #blackbuck #cameratrap #behindthescenes #conservation #wildlifereserve #wildlifephotography

We have become members of the British Deer Society! Like us, the BDS educates and inspires people about deer. They raise awareness about wild deer and the issues surrounding them. They ensure wild deer in the UK are respected and valued while being kept healthy and at sustainable numbers, so they can benefit biodiversity and the wider environment. We are excited to share our passion for deer and protecting their welfare. The reserve is action packed at the moment with a new Kafue Flats Lechwe calf, our Red Crowned Cranes coming out of soft release, our new bongos, Javan peacock chicks, the 3 Bustard females showing themselves more and all the antics our animals usually get up to. What better time to get your camera out and capture the action! We are now the only zoo in Europe to house a bachelor Bongo group consisting of 3 males capable of breeding!! Meet our 2 new handsome Bongo bulls, Arusi on the left and Mwisho on the right. Today we know that there are less than 100 Eastern Mountain Bongo left in the wild. Having these two is very exciting as hopefully one day the European captive population can contribute towards re-release prospects. For now, we aim to provide important support to the captive breeding programme (EEP) by assisting in holding surplus breeding males that are not needed at present but may be needed one day. This year we have been conducting ecological surveys on our reserve to create a baseline of the invertebrate and reptilian populations that can be found at Watatunga. Our overall aim is to see what the levels of diversity are across the reserve and to see if we have any rare or endangered species! We will then use this information to target our conservation efforts over the next few years; for instance, if we find a rare species, we can plant specific crops to encourage an increase in the population size. In the end, this is a unique tool to make the conservation at Watatunga more effective for native species. #conservation #ecology #invertebrates #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #reptiles #norfolkwildlife
