  • In a recent article published by The Guardian, the spotlight is on the UK's canal network and its critical role in climate resilience. Richard Parry, Chief Executive of the Canal & River Trust, highlights that canals could help reduce the impacts of extreme weather on urban communities. During heavy rainfall, they act as essential drainage routes, protecting nearby buildings from flooding. Beyond flood mitigation, canals supply drinking water to over 5 million people annually and support biodiversity and urban cooling - proving they're vital for a sustainable future. • 🚨 Did you know? 💧The UK relies on virtual water - the water used to produce imported goods like food and clothing. ☕This means every cup of coffee, T-shirt, or chocolate bar you consume has a hidden water footprint. 🌍 For example: 👕 A single cotton T-shirt can require 2,700 litres of water to produce and a cup of coffee - around 140 litres! 🤔 Understanding the water behind the goods we use can help us make more sustainable choices. 👣You can reduce your "virtual water" footprint by supporting sustainable brands, buying local, and rethinking fast fashion purchases. 🌍 Don't forget to follow us on socials for tips and insights. 📧 You can also join us as we explore the water challenges and solutions shaping our future by subscribing to our Water Matters newsletter and/or by tuning in to our podcast. 🎙️ 👉 Links to subscribe are in our bio. #virtualwater #watersaving #waterchallenges #watermatters

  • It might seem counterintuitive, but droughts can set the stage for severe flooding. During prolonged dry spells, soil becomes hard and compact, losing its ability to absorb water effectively. When rain finally arrives - especially heavy rainfall - it runs off the surface instead of soaking into the ground. This can quickly overwhelm rivers, streams, and drainage systems, causing flash floods. Drought-stricken landscapes are also often stripped of vegetation, which normally helps slow down water flow and absorb moisture. Without these natural buffers, floodwaters spread faster and more destructively. This cycle highlights the complex relationship between water scarcity and excess. Listen now to Episode 3 of the Water Matters podcast, where we explore these issues and more. And if you haven't already subscribed don't forget to sign up in time for Episode 4 dropping this Friday...🎙️ 👉 Links to subscribe are in our bio. #podcast #newsletter #flooding #drought #watermatters

  • 🚨Did you know? 🎄Producing paper for Christmas wrapping consumes vast amounts of water? Each year in the UK, 227,000 miles of wrapping paper is used - that's enough to wrap the planet nine times! 🌍 💧Reducing and recycling wrapping paper can save significant water and energy resources used in production. Here's how you can make a difference: 🎁 Go reusable: Try fabric wraps or gift bags you can use year after year. 🎁 Recycle creatively: Use old newspapers, maps, or brown paper, which require less water and energy to produce. 🎁 Recycle right: Glitter-free and tape-free paper can be recycled, conserving water in the manufacturing cycle. What's your go-to eco-friendly wrapping idea? Share your tips below! 👇 🌍 And in the meantime, don't forget to follow us on socials for daily tips and insights. 📧 You can also join us as we explore the water challenges and solutions shaping our future by subscribing to our Water Matters newsletter and/or by tuning in to our podcast. 🎙️ 👉 Links to subscribe are in our bio.
