In a new opinion piece for The Planner RTPI, our Head of Sustainable Development, Nikita Perepelov, reflects on the Government’s recent National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) consultation and calls for further reforms to the planning system. Homes, offices, businesses, factories, schools and hospitals all need a supply of water, and new builds need sustainable water management systems. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/efidDWeP

Our purpose is to promote the conditions needed to achieve our vision through leadership in bringing people together, informing debate and generating ideas. Our priorities are to help water and wastewater companies work with others to: - Increase levels of customer and stakeholder trust in the sector - Address short and long term pressures on UK water and wastewater networks posed by growing demand and climate change - Inform the operation and development of markets, and their regulation, in the long-term interests of customers - Make the case for smart design and enforcement of legislation/regulation governing water quality and wastewater in delivering public health and environmental improvements On behalf of our members, we engage with Defra, other government departments, regulatory bodies (such as Ofwat, the Environment Agency, the Drinking Water Inspectorate) and consumer bodies - and their equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We also work with a wide range of partners, industry bodies, NGOs and stakeholders in support of our vision of a trusted water sector.

The public rightly wants to see the health of our rivers and seas improved and the water industry is ready to play its part. In London, Tideway London is a great example of what can be achieved with significant investment. Have a read of our new blog to learn how the 25km long Super Sewer is already helping improve the River Thames. https://lnkd.in/ebB6HZCN

Storm Darragh recently presented water companies with one of their toughest weeks of the year. Despite this, the sector was able to ensure that almost all homes, businesses, hospitals and schools retained the use of their water mains. In a new blog, our Head of Resilience Panayiotis (Panos) Achilleos explores how companies were able to protect their customers during this time. Our latest blog from Jeevan Jones explores how water bills have fallen in real terms since 2010 and what this has meant for investment. Had average water and wastewater bills simply kept pace with inflation since 2010, they would be £110 (or 25%) higher today. Over the 14 years since 2010, that’s an average saving of £750 saving for every household. To put that into context, added together for every single household in England and Wales that’s equivalent to £18 billion, which companies could have invested in improvements. Water companies have proposed investing £108bn over the next 5-years to secure our water supplies, unlock economic growth & end sewage in rivers and seas. Read the new blog: https://lnkd.in/eCVT_5FY

It’s estimated that by 2050 the UK will need an extra five billion litres of water daily. To help meet demand water companies want to build 10 new reservoirs (with the first already under construction near Portsmouth). Water companies have proposed investing £108 billion over the next five years to support economic growth, build more homes, secure our water supplies and end sewage entering our rivers. We now need Ofwat the regulator to approve these plans in full so that companies can get on with it.
The Government has made its ambitions clear for growth in the UK. At the heart of that agenda is ensuring we have the right water infrastructure in place to support the new homes and business headed for the East of England. But securing a future water supply in one of the most water scarce parts of the UK isn't a quick or easy. It can take decades to plan large megaprojects, like reservoirs - and that’s the job for companies like us at Anglian Water. We recently caught up with our Director of Strategic Asset Management, Sian Thomas to discuss the plans for our two new reservoirs in Lincolnshire and the Fens. Sian discusses the next stages of these two projects and what their completion will mean for future generations. #WaterResources #Growth #WaterSecurity

Tomorrow’s March for Clean Water is right to demand cleaner rivers and seas. Nobody wants to see sewage entering our waterways and for too long, water companies, regulators and successive governments have failed to act. Now, we all agree that we urgently need more investment as well as reform of our water system so that it delivers for people and the environment. While reform will take time, water companies have a plan for the largest-ever investment in the sector. Find out more in our latest blog from our Chief Executive David Henderson. https://lnkd.in/eHWe2M7T

Last year water companies in England and Wales delivered the most investment in a single year. In our latest blog Jeevan Jones our Chief Economist explores the long-term trajectory of investment and asks what is needed for the future.
