Founded in 1904, Watts Gallery – Artists' Village offers a unique insight into the life and work of G F and Mary Watts.

About us

Nestled in the Surrey Hills stands Watts Gallery - Artists' Village. A heritage site teeming with culture and excitement. The Artists' Village offers a creative home for the art collection of G F and Mary Watts in the historic galleries, and chances for new artists to flourish no matter what their age. From workshops to contemporary exhibitions, from our Artists in Residency scheme to tours of the historic Arts & Crafts house on the hill, there's plenty to inspire with our Art for All ethos. First opening its doors to the public in 1904, Watts Gallery is a purpose-built art gallery created for the display of works by the great Victorian artist George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904). After a major restoration project, visitors can now experience the Watts Collection in the historic galleries displaying the original decorative schemes. G.F. Watts holds a unique position within British art. He was critically acclaimed, admired by his fellow artists, both home and abroad, and was popularly adored, allowing him the platform to explore his idea of a poet-painter who could preach eternal truths and provoke social reform. Over one hundred paintings by G.F. Watts are on permanent display at Watts Gallery. Spanning a period of 70 years they include portraits, landscapes and his major symbolic works. From the dramatic entrance of the Livanos Gallery to the monumental sculpture and studio artefacts in the Sculpture Gallery, Watts Gallery shows the unique collection left by the artist as his legacy in the heart of a village.

  • Happy 30th Birthday to the National Lottery! 🎉 We're incredibly grateful for the significant role the National Lottery Heritage Fund has played in preserving the legacy of George and Mary Watts. In 2012, their generous grant enabled us to embark on the "Saving the Studios, Limnerlease" project. This ambitious endeavour allowed us to acquire and restore Limnerlease, the only surviving artist's house and studio designed by Ernest George. Thanks to their support, we've been able to: -Restore George Watts's studio -Establish a permanent exhibition showcasing the work of Mary Seton Watts -Build a state-of-the-art conservation studio -Create a community studio to support our Art for All Learning program Today, visitors can experience the inspiring environment where the Watts couple lived and worked, gaining a deeper understanding of their artistic journey. “We want to be a tool for teaching, to support teachers to confidently take up space and use the gallery on their own terms.” - Sarah Jarvis, Watts Gallery - Artists' Village. As the new academic year gets underway, we're excited to share our commitment to making museums more accessible for children in this new article from Arts Professional. We believe museums should play a key role in education, but research shows that financial constraints and time pressures make it difficult for schools to take more trips to museums and cultural institutions. In response, we've partnered with the Clore Duffield Foundation to launch Art Fund Teacher Fellowships, an initiative that enables state secondary school teachers to work within museums, building closer relationships with local schools. Applications are open now for museums to participate in the 2025-26 academic year. The deadline to apply is fast approaching: 18 October 2024. 🎨 Read the full article to learn more about how museums like Watts Gallery are leading the way and see how you can get involved: https://bit.ly/4gyyGo6
