Celebrating the launch of the Commercial Timber Guidebook! Elliott Wood, OFR Consultants, Lignum Risk Partners
We’re thrilled to announce that the UK’s first Commercial Timber Guidebook has now launched! 🎉 The project is spearheaded by Elliott Wood, OFR Consultants and Waugh Thistleton Architects, working with specialist insurance consultants Lignum Risk Partners to engage the wider insurance sector. This ground-breaking guide represents a major step-forward in supporting the use of sustainable timber in office buildings. The project, kickstarted with a grant from the Built by Nature network, also attracted co-funding and support from major developers Stanhope PLC, British Land, Lendlease, Related Argent, Derwent London, Landsec, Muse, Hines and Berkeley Estate Asset Management - all seeking to overcome existing barriers to mass timber adoption. 👏 The guidebook addresses common challenges that face timber construction including fire-safety, durability, moisture and obtaining appropriate property insurance. It aims to provide technical guidance to those undertaking structural timber projects, providing a solid foundation as to the types of questions one should ask, and initial steps one should take, when starting this type of project, to ensure mass timber office buildings are designed and constructed in a robust, durable manner. We’re excited to contribute to this worthy project, serving both the UK real estate sectors and the insurance industry. 🙌 You can read and download the guidebook by clicking on the link below 👇: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evicRkx6 #ofr #fireengineers #fireengineering #commercialtimberguidebook #clt #timberconstruction #firesafety #collaboration #industryinnovation

We're happy to report the launch of the Commercial Timber Guidebook! Working with Elliott Wood, OFR Consultants and Lignum Risk Partners to provide expertise on how stakehodlers can enhance insurability and safety in wooden buildings, this piece of work is an invaluable resource for construction industry professionals and anyone interested in building with timber!
Mass timber, mass potential. Mass timber can significantly reduce the built environment’s carbon footprint. It’s a renewable resource that can store carbon. It can also create beautiful, functional, and sustainable buildings. But its adoption in large-scale commercial construction, particularly in the UK, has been slow. That’s why we’re launching the Commercial Timber Guidebook. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭? It is a technical resource to address insurance challenges for mass timber buildings, focusing on durability and fire safety. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫? To enhance insurability and safety, it provides guidance for various stakeholders including 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭? We're thrilled to have our collaborative modular timber schools project discussed at this year's #COP29 Centre for Natural Material Innovation University of Cambridge The Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge Smith and Wallwork
🌍 Accelerating the Buildings Breakthrough: Solutions for Addressing Whole Life Carbon, Circularity, and Shifting to Bio-based Materials This moderated discussion will highlight cutting-edge frameworks, tools, and real-world solutions aimed at advancing near-zero emission and circular buildings. Focusing on vital tools such as the National Circularity Assessment Framework for Buildings, Circular Transition Indicators (CTI), Bio-Based Materials Compendium, 10 Whole Life Cycle Recommendations for the Buildings Breakthrough, and Minoro, the session will explore how these resources can be practically applied to drive sustainable building practices. ✨ The Challenge: The building sector faces significant challenges in implementing circularity principles and reducing embodied carbon across the full lifecycle of buildings—from construction to demolition. These principles, though critical for reducing waste and emissions, remain under-utilized in practice. Furthermore, sustainable materials management and the adoption of bio-based materials have not yet reached their full potential due to knowledge gaps and market barriers. ✨ The Solutions: This session will offer a deep dive into the frameworks and tools designed to address these challenges. It will provide practical approaches to achieving near-zero emissions through circular and whole life cycle methodologies and showcase how these strategies can be integrated into design, construction, and procurement processes. Participants will explore tools like the National Circularity Assessment Framework, Circular Transition Indicators, and the Bio-Based Materials Compendium, all of which aim to guide and support sustainable building practices at scale. 🎙️ Speakers Include: Nasra Nanda, Harry Mills, Emma Lappalainen, Usha Iyer-Raniga, Nazakat Azimli, Paul King, Roland Hunziker, Chiaki Okimura, George.K. Tarus, Sam Stratton-Short, Peter Vangsbo. 📅 Discover the full agenda and follow us live with the streaming link here: https://lnkd.in/d_7dSkxE 👉 For directions, event schedules, and more, visit the Pavilion page: https://lnkd.in/ew6ZwyGS We look forward to seeing you at the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion! #ActOnCooling #BuildForClimate #COP29

Planning granted for the retrofit of 123 Golden Lane! Providing multi-disciplinary engineering services, we’re collaborating with Waugh Thistleton Architects on the adaptive re-use of the late Victorian building for Bywater Properties. The design removes the existing top floor, a 1970s addition, and replaces it with two additional floors of timber mass construction to deliver contemporary workspaces.
