How low do generic prices need to fall to trigger a shortage? Thinking back to an article we published on the 20th Sept 2024 (What Price Triggers A Shortage? Part 3), we wanted to look at the argument from a more recent point of view. In that article we said that any generic product which has its price fall below 7% of the original brand’s price was very likely to be granted a concession in the years or months following this low point. This is because very low prices can force manufacturers out of the UK due to product unprofitability. Looking at data from October 2024 we found that this was more or less correct. However, many of the products granted concessions have been on the market for so long, a branded equivalent is no longer available so we have no starting point for the calculation. For products which do still have a branded equivalent we found that the majority of concessions were granted after they had fallen to just a few % of the original brand’s reimbursement price. If the original brand’s reimbursement price is missing we need another way to make this calculation. We can’t use the Drug Tariff, because that normally falls with the average market price. Equally, we can’t use the actual price because some products granted concessions had quite high prices, in October as high as £47.28. The WaveData team will continue to explore different options with the aim of including all products and not just those recently launched. It may be possible to use an average of some sort, but we’ll get our heads together and work through our data sets. #pharmapricing #drugshortages
