We are Hourglass (formerly Action on Elder Abuse). We are the only UK charity calling time on the abuse of older people.

About us

Hourglass (Formally Action on Elder Abuse (AEA)) is a non-profit organisation that operates across the four nations of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. We are dedicated to calling time on the abuse, harm and exploitation of older people and are driven by our core mission to establish safer ageing for all. We aim to prevent the abuse of older people by raising awareness; encouraging education; promoting research; and collecting and disseminating information. We support older victim-survivors of abuse and their loved ones through our free 24/7 helpline, instant messaging services and direct intervention through our community response programme. We provide up-to-date information through our monthly newsletter, run webinars and conferences on issues surrounding the abuse of older people, produce resources for practitioners and the public and provide training and education to organisations that deal with older people. Our vision is a society which values older people and one in which they and other adults can live free from abuse perpetrated by those in whom they have an expectation of trust. Where such abuse occurs, we seek an environment in which it can be identified and addressed. Get in touch with us today to find out how you can help us reach this goal: www.wearehourglass.org

  • While many aspects of the abuse of older people are understudied, there is a significant lack of attention focused on the sexual abuse of older people. Ageism is a major reason why older people are not seen as experiencing sexual abuse, with pervasive notions of older people being asexual or not sexually desirable. This can lead to victim-survivors feeling unable to report their abuse due to fear of not being believed. It's vital that these harmful stereotypes are dispelled. We're presenting a webinar next week on the 23rd January, speaking to an expert panel on the importance of raising awareness of the sexual abuse of older people, spotting the signs and lot's more. • Today we’re looking forward to hearing the debate in the House of Commons on tackling Violence Against Women and Girls. VAWG transcends demographics, culture and age-groups, however much of the focus has been on younger populations. The abuse of older people is a critical part of this discussion, with its own unique challenges and barriers that require specialist support and legislation. We hope to hear about the key intersections between VAWG and the abuse of older people in this debate, as we call for comprehensive and inclusive strategies and for the experiences of older victim-survivors to be heard.

    Government Affairs at Hourglass

A very cold but very bright morning in Westminster today. I'm here on behalf of Hourglass for meetings with MPs and a debate later on tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG). VAWG transcends demographics, culture and age-groups, however, much of the focus has been on younger populations. The abuse of older people is a critical part of this discussion, with its own unique challenges and barriers which require specialist consideration. Hourglass calls for comprehensive and inclusive strategies, and for the experiences of older victim-survivors to be heard.

  • In this new article the Victims' Commissioner for England & Wales warns that funding cuts could have a serious impact on victim support services.   As the only UK-wide charity supporting older victim-survivors of abuse, we are similarly concerned of the impact that the Employers National Insurance increase and potential funding cuts will have on our services.   The need to bolster the economy shouldn’t be to the detriment of victim survivors. By removing vital members of staff from the team, we are putting more and more older people at risk and destabilising a charity already operating with a skeleton staff.   With cases of abuse on the rise, ensuring specialist support services can thrive is crucial. Victim-survivors need to know help is available when they need it most. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/efvq4-f7
