Have you ever actually listened to your internal dialogue? It's the background commentary to your life, and yet, unless someone points it out, you may not even realise you have it. However, we have more conversations with ourselves than anyone else! Stop for a minute and listen to what your internal voice is saying. Is it kind and loving? Nasty and cruel? Is it positive or negative? Better still, ask yourself, 'Would I let someone else speak to me the way I'm speaking to myself?' It's important to remember that YOU create your internal self-talk. If it is pessimistic or destructive, it isn't reality. It's merely a byproduct of outdated programming and automatic, repetitive thoughts. You can alter the voice's intensity by adjusting the pitch, tone or accent if it's negative. Change it to something you find funny, e.g. Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or a complaining, whiny teenager. When you do this, you automatically adjust the feelings/emotions associated with it. This is a frequent occurrence when I'm working with clients who've been bullied. Once they realise it's a safe place to talk where they won't be judged and they begin to open up, the realisation of what they've been through can be eye-opening. One question to ask yourself if you're going through a tough time is, 'What would I tell a friend who was going through the same thing?' Tune into the conversation you have in your own head. If you're not careful, your inner critic can sabotage all your goals. Thank you to everyone who has supported me this year, including clients, coachees, delegates, and followers. It's certainly had its ups and downs, but I couldn't have got here without you all. Merry Christmas to everyone. #Christmas #Christmas2024 #thankyou

So many people spend a disproportionate amount of time focused on everything they can do nothing about. That's what's commonly described as 'learnt helplessness'. We get more of what we focus on. So, if you're continually orientated towards expecting the worst, that's what you'll keep getting more of. Instead, pivot (reframe) and focus on what you can do something about. 👍🏼 Write everything down. 👍🏼 Create a plan. 👍🏼 Get into action. You may need to adjust your actions a few times before something works. That's OK. Edison created 10,000 prototype lightbulbs before he found one that worked! If you have a challenging situation that requires a solution or goal you want to achieve but don't know where to begin, start by getting clear about all aspects of it. Get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper; things often seem far worse than when they circulate in our minds. I realise that technology has now overtaken handwriting. However, I still prefer an old-fashioned pen and paper as our brains remember 700% more of what we physically write down. When you get your thoughts out of your head, problems often seem less complicated and overwhelming, making it easier to analyse and organise them into a workable, step-by-step plan. Take action towards your goal (no matter how small) that same day, and you'll automatically activate your Reticular Activating System, the part of the brain that helps draw your attention to specific things important to achieving your goal. People will treat you how you allow them to. If any of your colleagues, friends or loved ones continually mistreat you, it's likely because you're letting them. Others assume their behaviour is OK if you don't challenge or set boundaries. I realise that dealing with potential conflict can be incredibly difficult or even unsafe for some of us, primarily if we identify as a people-pleaser. However, the longer you allow bad behaviour to continue, the more acceptable you make it and the worse it will get. If you think someone is mistreating you, you must talk to them. It doesn't have to be an aggressive exchange (which tends to happen when we let things build up). Get clear about what you want to say and the outcome you want, and practise saying it aloud before having the actual conversation. When you visualise everything going perfectly, you'll be conditioning your nervous system for success. It’s important to remember that the people who argue and complain when you set boundaries typically have the most to lose. Many clients I work with, especially those nearing burnout, are not taking care of their basic needs. I know that any decline in my physical or mental health is always accompanied by a lack of sleep, nutrition and hydration, exercise, and daylight/nature. If you're going through a tough time, focus first on these things. Once you get those right, everything else will feel so much better. However, try not to make massive changes at once. Your brain won't like it! Start small with consistency. There are two types of procrastination, 'productive' and 'destructive'. On the whole, productive procrastination can be positive, as our brains need time to wander, to figure things out and to have space to develop creative ideas and solutions. ‘Destructive’ procrastination, on the other hand, is closely linked to stress. The subconscious mind needs to feel good immediately to relieve stress, anxiety and overwhelm. In this case, it's much harder to get into action as it isn't just the task you should be doing that’s stressing you. It's likely to be something deeper, e.g. anxiety about your job, children, money, etc. We commonly use numbing activities such as online shopping, gaming, Netflix binging, drinking, etc., in an attempt to not have to think about what we should be doing. ‘Numbing’ can be advantageous for productive, short-term procrastination but can be a sign of more significant issues if it’s excessive or long-term. Take a critical look at how much time you spend in ‘numbing’ activities; it can indicate deeper problems that require closer attention.
