McCarthy spent more than 20 years at Adnams. His tenure originally began as an electrical engineer for the company. As his interest in brewing and distilling grew, he went on to study and successfully pass his brewing exams. In 2009, he was selected to be the lead engineer in Adnams’ new distillery project. His efforts include developing more than 30 gin recipes in the lab ahead of the distillery’s official opening, and he became known for his “innovative approach and unwavering commitment to quality”, the distillery said. McCarthy continued to develop a range of spirits for Adnams, which have collected a number of international awards. Jenny Hanlon, Adnams CEO, said: “We are so deeply saddened to learn of John’s death. He was a wonderful friend, mentor, colleague – and an incredibly talented and devoted professional too. “John had time for everybody and anybody – no matter how busy he was. He was one of those special people who really left an impression. “His expertise and dedication undoubtedly transformed Adnams into a leader in the craft distilling movement. John’s passion for his craft and his belief in the power of community were truly inspiring. He will be deeply missed by all of us.” #Whisky1901 #CaskInvestment #WhiskyInvestment #whisky #whiskylover #whiskygram #instawhisky #whiskylife #scotland #whiskytasting #dram #instadram #leadingindividual

Whisky of the month- Teaninich- (pronounced tee-ni-nick) Founded in 1817 in the Northern Highlands by Captain Hugh Munro. This distillery is owned by Diageo, Scotland's largest producer of single malt whisky. The only official core bottling is a 10-year-old in the Flora & Fauna series, but a limited 17-year-old matured refill American oak was launched in 2017 as part of the Diageo Special Releases programme. Teaninich 10-year-old is initially fresh and grassy, quite light with vanilla and hints of tinned pineapple. It is medium bodied, smooth, slightly oily, with cereal and spice in the mouth. #Whisky1901 #CaskInvestment #WhiskyInvestment #whisky #whiskylover #whiskygram #instawhisky #whiskylife #scotland #whiskytasting #dram #instadram #Teaninich

Whisky term of the month: Peat Peat is used to traditionally dry malted barley at the end of the malting process. This takes place in a kiln and also adds flavour as a side effect. Peat is made of compacted plant material that is compressed over thousands of years and is produced in wet, boggy environments in the absence of oxygen. Peat was dug up and dried as part of the traditional farming year in much of the Highlands and islands of Scotland. It was used as a fuel for cooking and heating the home in the absence of modern fuel alternatives. It was the only fuel available in many locations, hence its use in the malting process. During drying a compound called phenol is released in the smoke and gets locked into the cereal grains - this is then carried through the entire whisky making and maturation process. The smokiness of a whisky is measured on the PPM (Phenol Parts per Million) scale. The flavours from peat are generally described in two ways: 1/ Medicinal, TCP, germoline, hospitals, surgical bandages etc. and 2/ Smoky, smoked meat, burnt wood, bonfire ash etc #Whisky1901 #CaskInvestment #WhiskyInvestment #whisky #whiskylover #whiskygram #instawhisky #whiskylife #scotland #whiskytasting #dram #instadram #PeatedWhisky
