Whitby Wood is sponsoring the British Council for Offices ‘Talk & Tour’ of the Design District, Greenwich on January 28th, 2025. Associate Gioele Nunziatini and the Design District's Alex Howard will lead the evening event — providing insight into the scheme's vision and engineering strategy and a tour of the diverse range of creative workplaces that occupy London’s first durable and purpose-built design district. The project supports new generations of workers and new ways of working, inspired by the very fabric of its 16 unique buildings and their inter-relationships. A finalist in the 2024 BCO Awards, the Design District London is a central feature of Knight Dragon’s masterplan for the Greenwich Peninsula, and demonstrates the value of a market for less conventional office space. This event is open to BCO members only. The UK’s first floating public sauna has launched at Liverpool’s Princes Dock! Wyld Sauna is designed to float gracefully on Liverpool’s UNESCO-recognised waterfront as if it has always been part of the landscape. Our team worked closely with co-founders Jon Miller and Tom Berendsen to see this community project come to fruition. The prefabricated modular hybrid timber structure was craned into the water then floated into position. The exterior features Japanese shou sugi ban charred wood and the interiors are clad in thermally treated alder and spruce. ‘Convincing the authorities that a floating sauna could enhance rather than detract from [the] legacy [of the dock] was a delicate task,’ said Jon. ‘It required diplomacy, creativity and a clear vision of how the project would blend into its surroundings.’ The dock has been given an ‘Excellent’ water quality rating from the Environment Agency, with four oxygen pumps and regular water testing to ensure optimal swimming conditions for bathers eager to try hot and cold water therapy. Jon said, ‘It’s a place where nature and urban life meet, which is exactly what Wyld is all about.’ 📰 Read the project feature in Wallpaper* below Wyld Sauna Liverpool Waters Propel PR 📸 Alexander Barlow #engineers #structuralengineers #floatingstructures #sauna #liverpool #floatingsauna #liverpoolwaters #timberstructures #timberdesign #waterfront #heritage #wyldsauna #whitbywood

Following last week's Dezeen feature, we are excited to share these fantastic photos of Escapade Silverstone, taken by Jack Hobhouse earlier this year. Designed by us, the development features 60 high-spec residences and a Clubhouse, with spectacular views of the iconic Silverstone Racing Circuit to attract passionate motorsports fans from all over the world. The masterplan accommodates a mix of property types and a Clubhouse, each carefully positioned to offer a variety of experiences. Directly overlooking the circuit, the front-row ‘Trackside’ residences provide exceptional views, allowing spectators to be completely immersed in the action. Behind the front-row, sit the ‘Dual Aspect’ residences, which offer 360 views of the site from their rooftop terraces. To the rear of the site, the ‘Countryside’ residences provide an outlook across the neighbouring natural landscape. The development offers individuals a chance to be immersed in Silverstone’s automotive culture, as the design is fully integrated into the circuit. The Clubhouse sits at the end of the front row, next to the Becketts Grandstand and directly overlooking the circuit. Positioned on one of Silverstone’s prime corners, it provides guests with panoramic views across the track, whether they choose to witness the action from inside or out. Beyond providing the perfect place to watch all of the activities on the track, The Clubhouse also offers a multitude of other amenities to enjoy, including a swimming pool, driver-focused gym, treatment rooms, track-briefing area, concierge, restaurant, bar and a roof terrace. Civils design engineer Tom Tosetti was awarded New Civil Engineer ‘Graduate of the Year’ at the 2024 NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards, held at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) headquarters in London last month. The 17 shortlisted candidates were selected following a longlisting and shortlisting process carried out by 37 judges drawn from associations, clients, contractors and consultants. These candidates were then asked to deliver presentations to a panel of judges on ways that the industry can extend the lifespan and enhance the climate resilience of ageing infrastructure assets. The judges praised Tom's “deep understanding of the challenges the industry is facing to enhance the climate resilience of assets and spoke in detail about solutions.” Tom has initiated several projects at Whitby Wood to reduce carbon emissions, including conducting analysis of embodied carbon within a range of construction materials and optimising material selection. He believes civil engineering is critical to responding positively to the global climate crisis and says he has found a home aligned to his ethos at Whitby Wood. “Whitby Wood is an ethical practice, and that’s something that is really important to me,” he says. “You can make an engineer out of anyone who’s got the practicality to want to do stuff, but to actually do good, you need that moral compass.” Congratulations Tom! The NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards celebrate the talent of those early in their careers and representing the future of civil engineering. This year a total of 119 individuals from 49 different companies submitted entries for the categories of Apprentice of the Year, Degree Apprentice of the Year and Graduate of the Year. #NCEawards #NCEgraduateoftheyear #awards #civilengineering #civilengineer #graduateengineers #graduates #careers #engineeringimpact #wearewhitbywood

We delivered the structural, civil and geotechnical engineering for Escapade Silverstone— the masterplan scheme of steel frame, plus traditional construction buildings, at the Silverstone Racing Circuit in Northamptonshire, UK. Designed by Twelve Architects & Masterplanners, 60 high specification residences fall into three categories; trackside, dual aspect and countryside, plus a two-storey clubhouse with leisure facilities and a roof terrace overlooking the racing action. The 15 three-storey trackside residences are designed to offer ‘an immersive racing experience’. Each comprise a reinforced concrete garage topped by cantilevered braced-box steel frames for the living quarters and terraces. Deep trusses support the floors between garage and columns, and the stacked box aesthetic is achieved by very thin floor zones within the structure. Whitby Wood Director Chris Murray, who has overseen our work on the project from Stage 3 through to completion said, “It has been a fantastic experience collaborating with Twelve Architects for Escapade to deliver this iconic scheme on a unique site at the home of the British Grand Prix!” 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/enmcu3WD 📰 Dezeen, Emily Wright Client: Escapade Silverstone Architect: Twelve Architects & Masterplanners Main contractor: HG Construction Project Manager: Cummings Group Structural, civil and geotechnical engineer: Whitby Wood MEP engineer: FLATT Fire engineers: BB7 Planning: Cube Design Ltd Timber cladding: Russwood Landscape architect: Rappor Photography: Jack Hobhouse #escapadesilverstone #silverstone #escapade #engineers #structuralengineer #geotechnicalengineer #civilengineer #structuralengineering #masterplan #whitbywood

Optoppen is live! Recently launched, Optoppen is a new, online viability tool for building owners, developers and city planners to understand their opportunities for extending existing buildings vertically. The website and 3D web app was created by design firm Mule Studio and engineer Whitby Wood and includes policy information, research and innovation in vertical extension with biobased materials. The platform also showcases case studies from Amsterdam, Barcelona and London showing how Optoppen can be done. The project involved a wider project team based in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, and has been financially backed by Built by Nature, a network and grant-making fund. Project lead and Whitby Wood director Kelly Harrison described the Optoppen solution as ‘win, win, win’ as it creates “the most space possible with the buildings we already have, and the most readily-available, resource-efficient materials”.
