The role of Executive Architecture, balancing vision and delivery – A Perspective by David Skelton. Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of delivering large-scale urban regeneration projects across the UK, from West Hampstead Square to Royal Wharf and Brent Cross Town. Working with clients like Ballymore, Related Argent, and Reef Group has provided us with invaluable experience in Executive Architecture—translating creative concepts into buildable, compliant, and high-performing buildings. As Executive Architects, our role goes far beyond producing technical drawings. We balance creativity and buildability, ensuring design intent is preserved while addressing regulatory, commercial, and technical challenges. Great to see Homes England have visited Middlewood Locks recently. This project is a large-scale multiphase regeneration project delivering homes and a new neighbourhood in Greater Manchester. Whittam Cox Architects have been working on this for over ten years now, creating the masterplan and vision, designing and securing all planning applications, and overseeing delivery of the built form to date. Insightful AJ article (30/01/25) on the Building Safety backlog... Headline summary: Only two higher-risk buildings have been approved under new regime; this is the reality of the slow approval process being experience by architects, developers and contractors on high-risk building (HRB) schemes under the new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) regime. Since the regime's inception in October 2023 130 HRB schemes have been submitted under Gateway two. The BSR has rejected seven applications, deemed 11 invalid, and requested more information on 13, while 79 remain under review. The average time to determine an application is 18.4 weeks, exceeding the expected timescales. The BSR has emphasised the need for detailed and clear information in applications, particularly for structural and fire requirements. At Whittam Cox Architects we are embracing the Building Safety Act and, over the last 18 months, have developed a robust approach with documented processes and training to advise and support clients through this.
