ICYMI: Our documentary, The Ugandan Quidditch Movement, is a Vimeo Staff Pick! Teacher John Ssentamu conjured up a whimsical antidote to truancy and gender discrimination in his rural Ugandan village. Over the last decade, the fantastical, mysterious, and gender-inclusive game of Quidditch (yes, from Harry Potter) has bolstered attendance and blossomed into a countrywide phenomenon. • Happy earth day fellow humans! 🌳 🐛 🌻Activity of the day: 1. Lay down and close your eyes. 2. Imagine an outdoor place - somewhere you have been, or would like to go. It can be a mountain, or a forest, a jungle, a park, your garden, you choose. 3. Just feel for a moment what it's like to be there? Are there animals? Or insects? Can you smell anything? And what colours can you see? 🌲 🐞 How did that make you feel? Pretty nice, huh? We'd like to take this special day as an opportunity to remind you of the calming and restorative quality which nature carries. Remember to return to nature often, after all it is part of all of us 🌵 We hope you join us in the journey to protect our precious land across the world, and a big thank you to those that already have! 🌼🐝 Your Wigrow team

🍫😞 Stolen Futures: How Limited Education Traps Children in Cocoa Labor!       😞 Limited access to quality education has a significant impact on child labor in the cocoa sector. 😞 When children cannot access or attend quality schools, they may be forced to work in the cocoa fields to contribute to their families' income. 😞 This situation perpetuates the cycle of poverty and child labor, as children miss out on opportunities for personal development and economic advancement. How Limited Access to Quality Education Influences Child Labor: 😞 Financial Burden: Families in cocoa-producing regions may face financial hardships, making it difficult to afford school fees, uniforms, or other educational expenses. As a result, parents may choose to send their children to work in the fields instead. 😞 Lack of Infrastructure: Rural areas often lack adequate educational infrastructure such as schools, teachers, and learning materials. This makes it challenging for children to access quality education. 😞 Cultural Norms: In some regions, traditional beliefs and practices may prioritize work over education, leading to lower school attendance rates. 😞 Opportunity Cost: For families in poverty, the opportunity cost of sending children to school rather than to work can be too high. Parents may rely on their children's labor to sustain the household. Way Forward: 😞 Improve Education Access: Invest in building schools in rural and remote areas to increase access to education for children in cocoa-producing regions. 😞 Reduce Educational Costs: Offer free or subsidized education to alleviate the financial burden on families. 😞 Provide school supplies and materials to support learning. 😞 Enhance Educational Quality: Train teachers to improve the quality of education and provide ongoing professional development opportunities. 😞 Introduce culturally relevant and engaging curriculum to enhance students' interest in learning. 😞 Promote Awareness and Advocacy: Raise awareness about the importance of education and its long-term benefits for children, families, and communities. 😞 Provide Financial Support to Families: Offer financial assistance or incentives to families to encourage them to keep their children in school rather than sending them to work. 😞 Monitor and Enforce Child Labor Laws: Strengthen laws and regulations to prevent child labor and protect children's rights to education. 😞 Engage in Collaborative Efforts: Support community-based initiatives that empower families and promote child welfare. #HealthyCommunities #CocoaWellnessRevolution" #EducateToEmpower #CocoaCommunityProgress" #DiversifyForProgress #EmpowerCocoaFarmers" #EmpowerCocoaCommunities #EndPoverty" .............. 🌿Liked this content? 🌿🌊 Drop a follow 🤝 and ring the 🔔 Bell on my profile. 🌿🌊 We can collaborate to make this possible!!! 🌿P.S. • 👨🎓 Have you ever heard of Paolo Freire? We mentioned him last week but here is a little more insight. He was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who questioned the mainstream educational systems across the world and wrote about the "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". He described that students were commonly simply passive listeners of teachers in the classroom and frequently just had to memorise and store information. He believed this stripped students of the ability to be creative and think critically about reality, which meant they were not questioning the oppressive nature of the world. The alternative he proposed? A problem-posing education, where students are presented with questions and problems, for which they need to be innovative and think critically to solve. Students would be given autonomy and agency in their learning with the purpose of promoting independence. He believed this would help children be curious and think about reality more deeply - why it is how it is, and how they fit in to it. ❓What do you think mainstream education is like today? And what do you think it should be like? #problemposing #problemsolving #problemsolvingskills #mainstreameducation #alternativeeducation #paolofreire #pedagogy #environmentaleducation #environmentalimpact #transformation #transformativeeducation #transformativelearning #greeneducation

Happy international women's day! 🎉 Read below about the powerful women on the front lines of the fight against climate change ☘️ Today (and everyday!) is a day to celebrate every woman all over the world who put their efforts into making the world a better place! Want to thank women personally? Donate here ➡️ https://shorturl.at/mGS29 #internationalwomensday #internationalwomensday2024 #IWD2024 #IWD

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the incredible women in Africa who are at the forefront of environmental conservation. Across the continent, women are planting trees to restore precious landscapes and vital ecosystems. And they’re empowering themselves and their communities in the process. In Western Kenya, our partner Women in Water and Natural Resource Conservation (WWANC) is supporting women to restore and protect Kakamega Rainforest, one native tree at a time. “We’ve trained women on fruit-tree grafting, nurturing indigenous trees and even leadership skills. This empowers them to not only plant trees, but to become voices for conservation in their communities,” says Rosemary Wamalwa, founder of WWANC. And today, women like Caroline Chisiai are building a brighter, more sustainable future. Through her work as a project scout, where she and many others in her community, monitor and care for newly planted trees, Caroline has gained newly found confidence and financial security, she says, “I didn’t have trees here. It’s them who gave me trees, 100! They also gave me a jiko [fuel-efficient stove]. Right now, when the kids go to school, water and tea is all prepared. And now I’m an empowered woman!” 📸 Rosemary Wamalwa (left) founder of WWANC, and Caroline Chisiai (right) walking through Kakamega Rainforest. #internationalwomensday
