Last week, we welcomed Gary Smith, General Secretary of the GMB Union, and other GMB representatives to our Broomfleet site. The visit was a great opportunity to share insights and strengthen our partnership while supporting success in the UK construction products industry. We highlighted key progress, including investments in skills, decarbonisation, and modern facilities. Notable updates included our £34 million investment in low-carbon, electrically fired tiles at Broomfleet and the commissioning of our new Smeed Dean Concrete tile facility. We also showcased our commitment to talent development through apprenticeships and our Centre of Excellence training facility, as well as our focus on sustainability through initiatives like STEM Ambassador programmes, Women in Engineering events, and evolving Social Impact plans. To conclude National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke with Rob Jollands, our Engineering Training Manager. Rob is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of skilled engineers, and his efforts play a vital role in providing high-quality apprenticeships that create meaningful opportunities for personal and industry-wide growth. Here, he shares more insights about our four-year Engineering Apprenticeship Programme: “Our four-year apprenticeship programme is designed to give trainees the time, support, and experience they need to develop into fully qualified team members. The journey starts with a year of off-the-job training at a trusted provider, where apprentices build a strong technical foundation before stepping into our production sites. This ensures they’re well-prepared for the hands-on challenges of real-world engineering. Once on-site, apprentices work alongside experienced professionals, learning directly from those who know the job best. To further support development, we run a residential training programme at our Centre of Excellence in Sandtoft. Here, apprentices spend 45 days a year in paid training, working on specialist projects and expanding their skills in a focused learning environment. This combination of on-the-job experience and structured training makes a real difference in their growth and confidence. Something I’m incredibly proud of is how, at wienerberger, we also believe in recognising and rewarding talent, which is why we offer a salary above the national apprenticeship minimum. As we are halfway through National Apprenticeship Week, we want to highlight and celebrate more stories of our apprentices. Today, Tracy Short, our Learning & Development Advisor, shares her apprenticeship-inspired career journey: “I joined wienerberger nearly seven years ago, starting as a Site Administrator before moving into the role of HR and L&D Coordinator in September 2022. Fast-forward to July 2024, and I’m thrilled to have taken on the role of L&D Advisor—a position that aligns perfectly with my passion for fostering development. Before my time at with the organisation, I worked as an apprenticeship assessor for a training provider, which allowed me to see the incredible impact of these programmes on individuals’ lives. It sparked my lifelong belief that apprenticeships are more than just learning opportunities—they’re gateways to growth and self-discovery. Now, I’m proud to practise what I preach. Alongside my advisor role, I’ve recently embarked on a Learning & Development Practitioner apprenticeship, and it’s been a rewarding journey. At wienerberger, apprenticeships are more than a box-ticking exercise; they’re a commitment to building skills, boosting confidence, and enabling success. As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2025, we are excited to share the stories of some of our apprentices this week. First up is Jackson Kean, our CIMA Finance Apprentice. Jackson shares his journey: “At college, career advice focused on university, but I knew it wasn’t for me. I struggled to see the relevance of much of what I was studying and wanted a path that offered real-world application. That’s when I discovered apprenticeships in accountancy and finance—gaining hands-on experience, earning qualifications, and having my education fully funded meant it was an easy choice. After a few months at wienerberger, I enrolled onto the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician programme, working four days a week and studying one. The blend of academic learning and practical experience helped me apply theory directly to my role. After passing five exams, I completed Level 4 and have now progressed to Level 7, on track to becoming a Chartered Management Accountant. One of my proudest moments to date was not only being nominated three times but winning the ‘Apprentice of the Year’, at last year’s Employee Awards. It was such a great moment, and it was only made possible by the people who have helped me along the way. My apprenticeship journey is far from over! Over the next two years, I’ll continue my studies and exams as I work towards achieving chartered status." Several of our fantastic team members recently attended the Travis Perkins Conference over the past few days. We were delighted to welcome many branch managers, regional directors, and colleagues from Travis Perkins to engage in discussions about our product offerings.
