I had the privilege to speak at this event last night. It was like speed dating for ideas - 11 speakers with 5 minutes each to make and prove their point. I tackled a word that is commonly used in HR circles but one that we at Winning Scotland take some issue with and help people to think differently about - Talent. It’s a perfectly nice word but overused and misleading. If you are recruiting or simply supporting staff, is it really a word that matters? Is talent really what companies are looking for? I argued that we should be more interested in people’s ability to learn, improve and dedicate themselves to their profession. Rather than whether or not they have god given ability or look great on paper. I worried that it might offend some of the HR colleagues in the room but there were at least a few nodding heads. We’d love to talk it through with anyone who is interested.

Blue skies and optimism here - absolutely delighted to see the interest in prevention. Of course, funding isn't the only factor in prevention, but change is much harder without the momentum and empowerment it can bring. Prevention is for all of us, using the data from our current crop of 15 year olds can really help us to change things for the kids who come after.

Yesterday I represented MCR Pathways at Winning Scotlands Upstream Prevention in Practice event. Starting with an introduction to Planet Youth, hearing from Margret Lilja Gudmundsdottir and the amazing work in Iceland before a very insightful discussion from the panel. Collaboration is key, What is Prevention? It's everyone responsibility to ensure Scotland is the best place for our children and young people to grow up!!
